Gandalf is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In these stories, Gandalf appears as a wizard, member and later the head (after Saruman's betrayal and fall) of the order known as the Istari, as well as leader of the Fellowship of the Ring and the army of the West. In The Lord of the Rings, he is initially known as Gandalf the Grey, but after returning from death as Gandalf the White. As explained in The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf spent the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings travelling Middle-earth in tafuta of information on Sauron's resurgence and Bilbo's mysterious ring, spurred particularly kwa Bilbo's initial misleading story of how he had obtained it as a "present" from Gollum. During this period he befriended Aragorn and first became suspicious of Saruman. He spent as much time as he could in the Shire, strengthening his friendship with Bilbo and Frodo, Bilbo's heir.

Neville Longbottom is a character of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.Neville is a pure-blood Gryffindor student in Harry's year. Throughout the series, he is often portrayed as a bumbling, disorganised character and a rather mediocre student, though he is highly gifted at Herbology. His parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom, were prominent Aurors and Order of the Phoenix members until they were tortured and permanently incapacitated kwa a group of Death Eaters led kwa Bellatrix Lestrange; Neville was subsequently raised kwa his paternal grandmother, Augusta. Neville plays a minor role in the first four books, but Rowling wanted him to perform an act of bravery in Philosopher's Stone, in which Neville "finds true moral courage in standing up to his closest Marafiki — the people who are on his side" towards the climax.

Edgar Linton is a fictional character in Emily Brontë's novel Wuthering Heights. His role in the story is that of Catherine Earnshaw's husband. He resides at Thrushcross Grange and falls prey to Heathcliff's schemes for revenge against his family.

Edgar is the father of his and Catherine's daughter, Catherine Linton, and the brother of Isabella Linton. He is a foil of Heathcliff as a character, as shown kwa his tender, gentle, and weak personality as opposed to Heathcliff's savage, tyrannical nature.
