It's those damn Brits, putting in unnecessary letters and trying to complicate things... ;)

I'm Australian, so I do put in unnecessary letters ;), but I just think that the spelling of 'mom' is just weird.

You're used to what it's like where you were raised.
To me, a mum is a flower, not a parent.
Colour is a pronunciation you use when you're trying to be annoying

I don't care how things are spelled in other countries. I don't know why some people are so bothered by it.

Every country has it's own grammatical structure, vowel sounds, and words, and they're all different for a reason. Trying to keep all the words spelled the same would just cause chaos.

And, like Cassie said, I don't understand why people are bothered by how other countries spell words. I'm not bothered by the English using 'mum' instead of 'mom.' Why should they be bothered by the way the Americans spell it?

It doesn't matter. We are all intelligent enough to know what the word is and what it means....

Are people actually bothered by this? This is a phenomenon that happens in every language, not just English. Is there anybody willing to comment on why they are bothered by it? I'm really curious now.

I'm quite indifferent. Though American spelling for some reason does irk me, don't ask me why, it's one of those stupid idiosyncricies, and not a rational dislike, lol. Don't bash me for it.

Mums FTW.

Why is anyone bothered by this? It can be confusing when your read things and they appear to be full of spelling mistakes, but does it really matter?

Why shouldn't they, exactly? I agree with what Book-Freak has stated.

The real question is, who selected 'no' in the first place? I'd love to ask what's so bad about it.

I am pleased to report that I have gotten over teenage-era dislike of american spelling, and I beg you to view my cringe comment on here in light of the fact that I was 15. I was a filthy prescriptivist until I learnt a bit more linguistics

Unsolicited podcast reccomendation: Lingthusiasm. Shitty name, great content. Two linguists sit down and chat about stuff like "colour words around the world", "how babies acquire language" (super interesting), "how we make vowels", and a lot of other shit about language that you never even appreciated existed. One of my favs.

(Ngl the difference in date format still annoys me bc sometimes you just can't tell if a website's "10/3" means 10th of March or 3rd of October)
