I get that it would offend people if DP's weren't equally represented in race and whatnot, but that doesn't mean Disney has an obligation to those people's needs.

I think in a way, yes. So many little girls look up to the Princesses. I think it's nice to have a Princess that each little girl can relate to, whether it be her skin color, culture, or personality.

Disney is a corporation looking mainly for profit, but it's also built itself as a company that makes dreams come true for any girl, boy, man and woman. They do not have an obligation, but I believe that if they want to thrive as a company, it is a better option for them. Little girls (and some boys) idolize these characters and look to them as sources of beauty and character. I read an article about a little girl who cut off all her curly hair because "no princess has curly hair". By including different races, nationalities, appearances, and personalities, Disney gives every girl a chance to think that she is beautiful and worthy of being a princess, no matter what her skin tone. Now I guess all they need is a lesbian princess and a chubby one.

Technically speaking, the word obligation leads me to answer in the negative. This company is not mandated by any laws or decrees, and as such has no obligation to diversify it's lineup. This lineup is based on sales figures and marketability anyway, nothing more.
It might be a good idea to diversify the lineup, but they don't have to.
