Chapter 20: Weak

A mwezi and a week later

Hugh had been awaken kwa the sound of his phone. His stomach churned instantly though he didn't know why. He had a strange feeling he couldn't quite register. He looked at the clock, it was 1-10 am.
He couldn't find any strength to reach the phone so he let it ring. He was just too tired to do anything.
The phone stopped ringing and in a minute, it started ringing again. This had started to resemble some nights before, the nights he spent staring at the ceiling letting the phone ring as he couldn't and wouldn't answer the calls.
He knew he was a wuss, he knew he was the worst man ever. He had failed his life. He had failed his wife. He had failed his kids. And while his wife was saying nothing about it, his kids sure hadn't kept their mouth shot.

After the fourth missed call, Hugh got up and checked who was calling. It had been Charles. All four times. He looked at the clock again. It was 1-29 am. That meant it was 5-29 pm in Los Angeles. HE pinched the bridge of his nose. Hugh knew there was only one thing that would make Charles call his father.

Charles made it very clear the last time they spoke that he wasn't going to call him anymore unless it was about Lisa finally having the twins. Charles had alisema Hugh had let his family down. That it had been so typical of him.
He had been too scared, too thoughtless and he escaped. Only this time, not just metaphorically.
He'd fled US and found refuge in London.

Hugh couldn't forget Billy's last words to him “If wewe leave Lisa, if wewe leave us, you're dead for me”
And those words hadn't succeeded in keeping him kwa their side.

Becca had been the only one to stay in contact with Hugh. She would, from time to time, text him with what was going on. She had always been daddy's little girl. Except, she wasn't that little anymore. She was nineteen and looking like it.
Hugh hadn't spoken to Lisa since the night she'd found him packing his stuff in a suitcase. She was devastated, crying hysterically, which, Hugh never ever seen her do before. She had never been someone who cried over things. And yet, she had cried the night he'd walked away from her, from them, from his life. What was that telling him?

Hugh picked the phone and dialed Charles number.
As he waited for his eldest son to pick up the phone, Hugh remembered what the producers had been like once he'd told he was leaving, for what time, he hadn't known.
They had been, furious and shocked. They hadn't really known what could have happened that big, to trigger Hugh into leaving.
Although, he hadn't left for good. He'd promised to get back on the onyesha in few months. The writers had come up with a plot for House eventually that let them escape canceling the show.

“Charles?” Hugh almost couldn't recognize his voice as he spoke
“Yeah...” Charles alisema on the other side of the line, somewhat cheerfully.
“What's...” Hugh paused unsure of what to say, au what to ask “...going on?” he finished with a sigh.
“I became a brother again!” Charles laughed a bit “The twins are healthy and beautiful.” but ended with a, Hugh believed, disappointed voice.
“Oh, are they?” Hugh asked somewhat flatly.
“Yeah, Annabelle and Hannah, I thought wewe should know” Charles finished the conversation and as he did, Hugh put the phone down and got back to bed.

The moment his head hit the pillows, was the moment Hugh's eyes filled with tears.

*Hilly's eyes fill with tears as well*
I'm such a DAVID SHORE!!! *cries*
Oh, and would anyone who happens to be present on the Huli spot the moment we hit 666 fans, please make a picture of it, and post it?
I want to have it in store and grin every time I see it :DDDD

Anyway, feedback is always amazing :))))
upendo you

“Hugh, what are wewe doing?” Lisa asked, her voice shaky.
There was still half a foot of space between them, but he still had her hand and was rubbing the soft skin of her palm hypnotically, his eyes boring into hers.
    “Nothing,” he alisema lamely.
“Hugh…” Lisa’s stomach dropped to her feet as he began to lean forward, excruciatingly slowly. “Hugh please, wewe can’t keep doing this to me! You’re married.”
    Hugh stopped, their faces...

Hugh shook his head sharply, looking closely at his wife. She was avoiding his gaze. And suddenly, he knew. They were talking about two entirely different things.
“Why don’t wewe start from the beginning?” He asked gently, inwardly bracing himself. Jo nodded, to all intents and purposes looking as calm as ever. Only Hugh knew, from unfortunate experience, that it was all a show. She was panicked. She spoke.
    “I met someone.”

“Um—” Hugh gaped at her, his mind...

Ok, boys and girls... there is some strong language in this chapter... wewe have been warned! (Also, fun fact: this story as a whole is now 65 pages long!)

On with the show...

~*~*~
Padding around the house barefoot, Hugh made a ghostly looking specter. His pale face floated up one hallway and down another, the image aided from the steam rising out of his coffee mug as he waited for it to cool. Not a single person would blame the man for wanting a real drink at this point, but Hugh had always avoided strong spirits, for a number of reasons. Tonight the juu few went a little...

The Christmas-hiatus was very long. Hugh went back to England to celebrate krisimasi with his children, however it was a little weird to be « alone » with the kids. He and Jo have already filed for divorce and the divorce should be pronounced in a few weeks.
Now, he’s back in L.A. and all he can think about is … Lisa. Why hasn’t she waited still a few months ! Why did she meet and tarehe Robert right now ? He’ll be free in a few weeks ! Free to tell her how much he loves her, how many times he dreamt he was making upendo with her, kissing her …« Com’on, boy, nothing is lost, wewe still...

    It wasn’t Lisa.
A very similar accent floated back at him, a voice he had not heard in some time…
“James. Have wewe finished for the night?”
Hugh’s voice nearly cracked, and he tensed his diaphragm as hard as it would go to stop it. “Jo. I didn’t know wewe were—what are wewe doing here?”

~*~*~

Lisa turned off the water in the kuoga and leaned her forehead against the wall, letting tiny rivulets drip down out of her hair onto her shoulders,...

Ok... had really hoped to be able to make the big 4-0 some kind of wonderful earth shaking chapter, but alas, it was not to be... also, I'm sorry it's so short, but geez was it hard to write!

~*~*~
Quite a few hours later, Hugh entered his trailer and collapsed on his kitanda in complete and total exhaustion. The scenes had gone well, he knew, but it had taken zaidi tries than it usually did. David and Katie were eager to attribute it to the end of the season and “senioritis,” if wewe want to call it that… Hugh knew better. And then, Robert had caught him after they...
