so, before you guys start throwing stones at me, hear me out :D
given that SPN is no stranger to ontological paradox's and given that we have a "Wild West" eppy coming up, it's possible that angels send the brother's back in time to have the gun created, just in the same way Cas unknowingly sent Dean back into time to introduce his mother to Azazel..as i said earlier, the upper management in heaven would have wanted the gun created just as much as Azazel's side and since Raph's still aiming to put the apocalypse on track he'd have reason to see the brothers sent back in time for such a reason..if Sam does help create the Colt it would explain why the gun was created with the functions and limits it currently has..if it hadn't been, history wouldn't have played out the way it did..perhaps both angels and demons help the brothers design the gun for that very reason and they name the gun the Colt as a homage to Sam because, more so than any other person in history, he was quintessential to their plans..it could fit given the above reasoning if we're going to have a time travel episode to the Wild West..

oooor..Sam may strike a resemblance to Colt..anyhoo..and he could just be using his name as a way of completing whatever task it is they are there to do..if the people in the area they are in don't know Colt personally may have heard the name and only seen sketches of Colt in the papers, he could get away with it..thus Sam, for their time in the past, is "Samuel Colt", but it wouldn't affect anything in Colt's past prior to them being there nor would it affect his life after they are gone..

anyhoo..just a crazy weekly idea..

Id think so, its SPN but i dont think its that twisted and there has been to things pointing out suck a thing so i doubt it i don't think the colt really matters much anymore

Just on a sidenote though the Colt isn't called the Colt as an homage to anyone- it's simply the name of the gun. There's all kinds of Colts [Colt .45 etc]- the boys call it the Colt because it's easier than saying the Colt Paterson revolver that can kill demons.

The other thing is that Sam doesn't know how the Colt works so I don't see how he could help build it. He's not a gunsmith either. The only way he could 'help' is of course one of the angels stepped in and gave him the exact info he needed. Which personally, I think would be rather sad. I've always loved that the Colt was something designed and created by a human...but of course it would make sense that the angels would interfere.

Now what would make more sense is that if they went back in time, Sam and/or Dean could be the hunters that commission the Colt to be made. Because the legend says that Samuel Colt made the Colt for a hunter and that hunter used it a half dozen times before vanishing.

I think the Colt was made for Sam & Dean :)

Oh, I thought you meant like in a past life sort of way. In Spn, anything is possible... Anyway, there really was a guy named Samuel Colt, he created the revolver and had it named after him.

When I saw this poll, I thought it meant as an reincarnation. I voted no because we haven't had any reincarnation stories before or afterwards.

Also, if someone like Sam was Colt, or impersonated Colt to make the gun, wouldn't he also have to do everything else Colt did, like design the giant Demon's Trap in the S2 finale?
