ellarose88 I think HQ explained why A/G weren't having dinner together (other than at the start). Gwen didn't know what Arthur was intending on doing only Merlin cuz he was with him when he was given the horn. A/G share the same chambers! Arthur's room looks more homely now cuz of Gwen.

It may looks like as same chamber but you can compare again, Arthur room with armour decoration at fireplace (dinner scene 5x03) but Gwen fireplace are none of armour decoration (leon broke in chamber to inform Gwen 5x02). That the issue that make me anxious...I know that there is a scene after Arthur visit Gwen at Gaius place, Arthur seen to be in Gwen chamber. Sorry for bring this issue again. But can we still be positive..are we??

HumbleQueen I wonder if that's a mess up as they sometimes do. I was looking at the chest to the right of the door, the candelabra standing in the corner with a tapestry behind with the red edges. The candles aren't lit so it's hard to see the brightness of the color but it's the same IMO. Arthur is sitting in the chair which is same as the ones at either end in Gwen's scene. There are no chairs along the side in his scene, but that's probably just inconsistencies. With respect to the chest, tapestry, candelabra, the room would be the same, but I can't explain the other inconsistencies except maybe they're boots and water bottle issues. Now I need to look at the scene where he's eating but I'm needing to go to bed. Also, an article where they were interviewing the costume people, the person being interviewed was talking about him in armor a lot and then said "when he and the queen are in their chambers, he wears shirts, etc. etc. She said it like it was "their" chambers together.

EPaws Listen some of you might think me moderately insane but you cannot have a husband and wife in three episodes have no dialogue or interaction, especially when they are interdependent upon each other. It simply is not normal and though some are not in relationships and hence see no need for it, and yes there needs to be divergent story lines so the Queen is not an adjunct to the King there does need to be some level of reciprocity and thus far, massive fail. That is what I am talking about. A good relationship shows, not seeing it. They need to address that. Standing at the foot of Merlin's bed watching her sleep is so not what Arthur would do. That was written by some twit. He should be holding her hand, and discussing what is next, how the hell do we get rid of Wraith!Uther. What I am rebelling against, is the intentional choreography to ASEXUALIZE the relationship and show as little warmth as possible in order to bolster the failed bromance. Yes, dear, that is what they are doing and it isn't working for either segment of the fandom. Trust me on that. HQ made a valid point, the writing so damned poor that they cannot integrate more than one relationship at a time, this goes to tremendously bad writing. It also is a very juvenile perspective and ridiculously done and so readily apparent. THAT IS WHAT IS ANNOYING ME.

EPaws Oh and one last note on their endless, tired, revisiting of knowledge, um Arthur that prick tried to kill your wife twice. You are questioning and wondering if he is right? You actually don't have any balls at this juncture. Can someone give Arthur back his testicles please?

ellarose88 Like I've said a few times, I think Arthur knew that his father did it but didn't want to believe it. And in the end he did and he told Uther that he was going to rule it threat he wants. In terms of A/G I feel that the little of what we got showed warmth and Arthur was clearly concerned, but like HQ said they struggle writing more than one relationship ( though they managed to write A/G,A/M etc in 3.10 really well). But I know that we will get A/G scenes soon!

Lucerne28 Epaws, IMO, it is not about Arthur not having balls/back back bone, it is about the child inside the man, still seeing his father through rose colored glasses. Arthur did not want to believe that the father he loved, and idolized would try to kill someone he knows that he loves. He told his father at the veil, "I married for love. I love Guinevere more than I can express.” I believe that by saying those words, Arthur thought that that would make Uther see what Gwen meant to him. I don’t think any child, no matter what age, wants to think that a parent would go out of his or her way to deliberately hurt him/her. Thus Arthur’s initial denial, and response “I know my father could be cruel. But why would he do this to Guinevere? He knows how much I love her.”

lailastar I watched it and also read everybody's reviews, I am amaze at how so many people are willing to make excuses for this poorly presented episode. I sat there after watching the show with my mouth hanging open and said THAT'S IT. A good husband would be holding his wife's hand after an injury, a good king would have waken the castle and have guards looking for intruders ( since Arthur was so sure that Uther didn't do it at the time ). A well written show would end with the husband at his wife's bedside. THERE WAS NONE OF THE ABOVE, we really need to stop making excuses for this show. This is the third episode and yet this man and wife have not said a word to each other directly, WHO THE HELL IS MARRIED AND DOES NOT SAY A WORD TO EACH OTHER, THAT IS RIDICULOUS. I wonder what new excuses we will conjure up next week if there is no Arwen scenes, because it's another Morgana shit again next week. Gwen will be in the room but with nothing to say, GOD I HOPE I AM WRONG!!!

Melisey I hate being negative or complain, so I have tried to focus on what I actually did enjoy. Like Bradley's acting. Especially in the first scene with Uther, I loved when he expressed his love for Guinevere. The little Arwen scene was cute, Arthur looked so good in this episode. Mordred got a line. I did laugh a few times. I still have to be honest. I will join in with my opinion, no matter how unpopular it may be. I didn't like the episode. I don't see the plot help bring the story further along. There wasn't much progress. And for a show with only 13 episodes, there need to be progress. There were also quite a few plot holes. Arthur has ruled for three years. They have had prosperity. No matter how big of an effect Uther has on him. I think he should have been a little more confident. Not at first of course. The first scene when he saw Uther again, I really liked. It was very realistic that he was so hurt because his father showed disappointment. I don't think he should have doubted his men or Gwen afterwords though. It didn't make sense. It would make much more sense for me if they had brought his mother back and he could have learned the whole truth. That could be a step in the right direction. It could bring us closer to a magic reveal, and for Arthur to be the King he was destined to be. I also did not like the spirit of Uther wanting to kill Arthur for Camelot. Or that after all Uther has done, Arthur had problems believing he would harm Guinevere. I could believe his disbelief years ago, but it isn't belivable anymore. I liked some of the bromance, but some of it was still a bit immature and not really funny like before. I did laugh a few times though. Why didn't we see a worried Arthur holding his wife's hand and sitting by her side? Why did Gaius give her a sleeping draft after she had hit her head? At the end of the day there is so much to be explored that I don't feel that a filler episode was the best thing. Next week looks better though.

EPaws Lucerne it is the reset button I have issue with most of all and yes, I understand the view re the child within the man. To this day it pleases me when I get approbation from both my parents. When I made Group Director Daddy actually flew me out to Bermuda so we could have one of our classics chats over billiards, just he and I. We have done this since University days. Just spent an entire day together from breakfast to dinner and strategize re career and thoughts. It is our ritual, so I get that point. My issue is the badly orchestrated reset and the lack of Arwen. Now, this episode was about Arthur becoming his own man and I did like those bits, except the questioning of knights and round table and the bullcrap about the wifey, but the lack of Arwen, was ridiculous. Now, those who haven't a loving relationship or ever had one will try to overintellectualize it because well, they haven't an emotional or psycho-sexual clue, but your wife is laying on a bed, pretty much comatose and you don't hold her hand, you are not the one to be the knight in shining armor to do the rescue, come on, bull much. No this was done selectively and the ending, excuse me, no sorry arthur should have been with his wife, that does not detract from the very real friendship both characters have (meaning Merlin and Arthur). Sorry but it was a pathetic excuse and badly done.

Bonne-Bell Gotta agree with Melly about the episode not adding anything new to the story or progressing it. I feel like this episode would have been better served in S4 when Arthur had just become king and was doubting himself. Three years of being king and being married is not the time for him to still be having daddy issues and having his father make him doubt his marriage (which just pissed me off). I think we're at the point where we should be seeing a stronger, more intelligent, more self-assurred king and we haven't really seen any of that this season. Arthur's naivety and self-doubt have been going on since S1 and while I understand that in real life some people battle with these issues all their lives, this is a television show which has been promising us a great king since the pilot episode. So where is this king? Everytime that we get a glimpse of how great Arthur could be, they go and regress his character back into the naive, self-doubting person with daddy issues.

famfan Merlin Episode 5x03 The Tear's of Uther Pendragon Alrighty Then! It has taken me a day to write this review, because honestly, I didn't like this episode... Yep, I didn't like it. As a Merlin watcher you learn to roll with the punches when it comes to this show and as always there was some good, some bad and some WTF moments. What I liked! 1. The actors. The life blood of Merlin are it's actors. Bradley was particularly good in this episode. Welcome back BAMF Arthur, I sure have missed you. 2. ASH!!!!!!! I know, I have a love/ hate relationship with Uther too. But I loved seeing Ash again. 3. The over all feel of the show. It felt grown up and kind of scary. 4. The almost reveal! Uther is going to have an even crapper after life.... after that bit of info. LMAO! 5. Getting to see Merlin being all bad ass. (Always a turn on......I know TMI...lolol) What I hated! 1. The lack of Arwen! I know for a certain section of our fandom this was a score. It was just weak writing or direction not sure which is to blame. What husband wouldn't be by his wife's bed side and the lack of concern Bradley showed while delivering this lines was just annoying. The scene could have been done with Arthur consoling a sleeping Gwen while talking to Merlin and Giaus. The way the shot it was just weird. 2. The bromance, some of it was good and some seemed to be phoned in. As good as Bradley was in this episode at certain parts he seemed to just be dialing it in. What made me go Hummmmm?!?! 1. Arthur thinking Uther wouldn't hurt Gwen! ….WTF! Was he really being serious? 2. Arthur thinking Uther would like what he was doing in Camelot. Ok, I understand Arthur's dad issues. He may have wanted to say goodbye or I love you, but looking for approval was a little bit of a stretch for me. Since this is the Arwen spot I am going to really look at my OTP for a second. You know, now that Arthur and Gwen are married I really wasn't looking for my couple to be all in your face. What I was expecting was normal. It feels like they are going out of their way to keep Arwen apart. (EP and HQ said this last night.) It is all kinds of odd to me. They are making her a prop witch is really starting to annoy me. It's what always bothered me about how the wrote Arwen, they only think of the little touches when the are write big Arwen episode which will always and forever annoy the crap out of me. Well there you have it, or at least what I thought of it. It's not a horrible episode but honestly, I could have lived with out it. *sigh*

sportyshuie Just finished watching the episode and i know a lot here didnt quite like the episode but i'll go ahead and say that i do. Way better than part 2. Sorry folks ... I think the plot was made lighter to give us a break after enduring the tension filled two parter in the previous weeks. And also a way to bring back Ash whom we all clearly missed. Why i love it; - Bradley's acting is awesome, especially with his father. Owned the episode once more. - The banter between Arthur and Merlin are funny. I was laughing throughout. Love the scene where they get freaked out after finding Gaius behind them. And those slaps ... awww!! - Percival getting more lines as season goes. Good sign. -The final line Arthur tells his father, "you had your turn, now it's mine!". Now that's the king we all been waiting for to emerge and he showed his father what Uther is missing. And why i am pissed like hell; - No arwen scenes ... COME ON!! - Arthur not by Gwen's side when she's hurt. He should be holding her hands, kissing it, trying to make her comfortable. Instead, he stands away from the bed, arms crossed and thinking! I wanted to slap him!! - Arthur's doubts on the knights and Gwen after his father's chat. I thought he is the king but he still behaves like a prince when it comes to his father. Apart from the lack of arwen in it, i like the episode. I am looking forward towards next and though it promises enough, i fear we will still be left wanting a arwen scene because it looks as if the episode belongs to morgana,arthur, merlin and mithian, But like nanna pointed out, we shall wait and be rewarded. Patience is a virtue.

MISAforever Melly's on point! I agree with all she said, though I liked the episode. Or better said, I liked the acting, Merls, Uther and Arthur were all amazing!! But the plot was disappointing.. No need to explain, you've all said it.

HumbleQueen Woooow. So many differences of opinions, but I found as I was readiing through just now that each person is making a lot of sense, even though we're not all agreeing! So in the preview: I rather like seeing Gwen sitting there beside her husband when Mitthian telling him she has no one else to turn to other than him. Should be interesting to see what interaction if any there is between the two women. SURELY there will be something of reference to what happened 4x11 or these writers or worse off than I thought. I'm sure we'll all be closely watching the teasers and reviews this week.
