Who Am I?
By: Gabriela Acosta

Chapter 1
“How would wewe describe me Lilly?” I asked.
“Paula, you’re a very smart and unique person. But also mysterious. In a good way.” She replied.
“How am I mysterious? I mean, I never thought of myself that way.”
“Because you’re always so quiet around people. Not around me, of course. It’s like wewe shut yourself down completely, like wewe don’t want them to know who wewe are.”
“But wewe know I’m very shy! Besides, I’m not very good at socializing, wewe know? I always make myself sound like a total freak!
“Hey, wewe asked for my opinion!” She answered quickly.
“You’re right. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have reacted that way.”
Ring ring!
“Hello? Oh, hi mom.” Lilly answered her cell phone.
She was an 8th grader with medium short hair and pale skin, and also very maarufu at school. I knew her since she was in kinder. Since then, we were inseparable. She was my only real friend. I could be myself around her without having her stare at me like a total weirdo.
“You’re already in the front? Ok, bye.” She quickly hung up.
“I have to leave already. But, I’ll see wewe on Monday!” She was already walking toward the car.
“See wewe then.” I whispered.
* * *
“Honey, dinner’s ready!” My mother yelled from the jikoni downstairs.
“Coming!” I yelled back.
I quickly changed into a T-shirt and shorts. As I was walking down I bumped into Kati, my older sister.
“Watch were you’re going, wewe little punk!” She exclaimed.
“Sorry!” I yelled back. My sister is very mean, and only thinks of herself. She has a boyfriend, of course. She is a beautiful 18 mwaka old, who has long wavy hair and a perfect shaped body. She always hated me no matter how incredibly nice I was to her. Sometimes I feel like I can never be accepted kwa her.
I quickly rushed down the stairs, hiding my face from embarrassment.
“How was your siku today, Paula?’’ She asked while putting a plate of chicken and mchele in front of me.
“It was fine. We had a pop chemsha bongo yesterday, and I got my scores today. I got a 100%.”I replied without surprise in my voice.
“Miss. Know-it-all.” Kati alisema angrily.
“Stop it, Kati. wewe should be proud of your sister.” Dad replied to Kati’s comment.
I always knew Kati was jealous of my intelligence. She never admitted it, though.
I was half-way done with my dinner, when Mom announced, “I got a promotion!” She exclaimed happily.
“Wow. Really Mom?” I asked.
She nodded. “Yes. The boss says that I did an excellent job on my last patient.”
“Let’s all go downtown to celebrate!” My father exclaimed.
“Yippy.” Kati alisema with sarcasm.
“I think that’s a great idea, but I’d rather go to kitanda early today. I have a huge test for math tomorrow.” I said.
“That’s all right, Honey. wewe get all the rest wewe need.” My mother said.
“Thanks for understanding Mom.” replied.
I went to the jikoni sink, and washed my plate. I hurried off to my room, and changed to my PJ’s. I washed my teeth and combed my hair, and went to get a good night’s sleep.
