Gloria Steinem Defends Jennifer Aniston Amid Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Divorce: \'Enough Already\'

Gloria Steinem is decrying attempts to drag Jennifer Aniston into the chatter surrounding Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie\'s divorce.

"Yes, enough already," she told PEOPLE Thursday at the Women\'s Media Center 2016 Women\'s Media Awards. "Enough already."

Steinem has been a big supporter of the actress over the years, praising Aniston on numerous occasions for the way she carries herself while living in the spotlight. On Thursday, she expressed her support for Aniston\'s recent essay that called out body shamers and false pregnancy rumors.

"Yes, I think Jennifer has been subject to scrutiny in ways that I cannot understand or participate in," Steinem added, "and so we need her wisdom, we need her as an early warning system."

Aniston, 47, was married to Pitt, 52, for five years before their divorce in 2005. Aniston\'s husband Justin Theroux also spoke out in her defense, slamming what he called "nonsense" attempts to drag her into the divorce drama.

"There\'s an endless appetite for trash, apparently – though everyone would say that they don\'t have that appetite," he said. "But I think a lot of people do because people buy it."

Theroux continued: "But there are bigger things to bitch about. It\'s shocking how much bandwidth things can take up when there are far more important things going on in the world."

Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt on Sept. 19 after 12 years together. The actress cited irreconcilable differences for their split and asked for sole physical custody of the couple\'s shared six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox.
