What is Reid scared of? (S2, ep11 so it's an old episode)

In S2, the episode 'Sex, Birth, Death', Reid has sympathies with a teenager who is afraid of killing someone. And then he and morgan have this conversation about why the boy trusts Reid. morgan says 'cause he saw Reid's work, but Reid says to morgan in the car that it is because he "knows what it is to be afraid of your own mind". But what does he mean with that?
