Neither is exactly THAT Innovative. Simpsons is a milestone in adult animation and animated sitcoms but it's not like either was new (The Flintstones/ Ralph Bakshi's films). And The Little Mermaid started a renaissance for Disney Animation but there was plenty of innovation before that (Early Miyazaki films, Fantastic Planet, etc), hell the renaissance was probably started with Who Framed Roger Rabbit.


Now Akira, THAT movie changed the world, that is easily the most important piece of animation in the 80s.
