WHAT IS 'JEANS FOR REFUGEES'?


'Jeans for Refugees' is a Johny Dar project and artistic fundraising initiative dedicated to helping refugees around the world, with all proceeds going to the International Rescue Committee.

One hundred watu mashuhuri are participating in the project kwa donating a pair of their jeans to be painted kwa Johny Dar. Each pair of jeans will be made into an individual art piece consisting of the painted jeans showcased in a glass box, and the 100 art pieces will be exhibited in London. At the end of the exhibition each piece will be auctioned at a special fundraiser...

This mwezi I am choosing a book which I confess I have already read. It is so brilliant though. It deserves to be read zaidi than once.

Maybe wewe read Caitlin’s makala in my Esquire guest hariri this mwezi ("12 Things About Being A Woman That Women Won’t Tell You")… Maybe you’ve seen some of the hype about her new book Moranifesto... Either way, she is an English hero of mine who I think wewe need to know. On a side note, this book also appears to have been translated into lots of languages and should be reasonably easy to get hold of.

I didn't know what to expect when I started this Book Club. To have 100k members in less than a mwezi is amazing and for this I am so grateful but even zaidi amazing is the level at which I see these topics being engaged with and discussed and how generous people are being with their responses and insights into the material. This is what is meaningful to me. Then zaidi recently to look on Instagram and literally see people from all over the world coming together to discuss these issues in groups, over Skype, in person, mothers and daughters, friends, selfies, pictures of Cats and dogs...
