Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Season 2 episode 4 Recap 

The Miracle Painting- Agents of Shield- Season Two Episode Four- “Face My Enemy”

Last week on Agents of Shield, fans were promised May in a sparkly dress, Coulson and May dancing, and laser grids. Well, we did get two of the three, and a couple more bonus gems including: bone chilling bad guy threats, May flirting, laughing and later even beating herself up in this weeks fittingly titled episode “Face My Enemy.”

We open up in a church that has been ransacked save for a single painting, one of the Virgin Mary, The Baby Jesus, and a carving of the  mystery alien formula on the back. This painting is the object of interest this week.

May and Coulson are undercover at a swanky South Beach party where “The Miracle Painting” is being held to hold fundraiser for the ransacked church. They prove they’ve got the moves, but their cover is blown when they see General Talbot at the party. He acts strange when Coulson confronts him and promises not to blow his cover.

Coulson and May break into the vault to steal the painting, (no fancy dancing around the laser grid though) but find it already gone. “The government” had already acquired it that morning. Talbot calls Dr Whitehall to let him know that the painting was acquired, turns out that Talbot isn’t talbot at all, but is Sunil Bakshi (

Maya Stojan) who are working for Hydra under the command of Dr. Whitehall (Reed Diamond).

“Talbot” proposes to Coulson that they work together to decipher the alien formula, and Coulson can tell something is up. May goes to investigate.

When May finds Agent 33 and Bakshi in their room she attacks them, but they knock her out and send Agent 33 back to Coulson, disguised as May. Bakshi sends her with a device that will take down their plane and kill the rest of the team. He meanwhile interrogates the real May as to Shield’s interest in the painting.

“May” makes it on board, and plants the device to bring down the plane: it’s a computer virus. Fitz, who is finally making strides (although is still seeing visions of Simmons) is able to help the team disarm the device and saves the day. Later, Hunter brings the team beers in celebration and the team bonds.

Coulson almost falls for the trap, but when he asks the fake May out to coffee and she agrees, he punches her in the face. (May hates coffee.) Meanwhile May escapes her bonds and fights Agent 33 who is still in disguise as her while Coulson goes after Bakshi who tries to escape with the painting. Coulson stuns Bakshi as he is calling to be picked up, May knocks out Agent 33 and the two escape.

Coulson brings up a very touchy subject with May multiple times in this week’s episode. He is afraid that he is going to go the way of Garret and lose his mind, and he wants May to kill him if that happens.

She had already created a plan to move him to a faraway cabin in Australia if anything did happen, but he tells her that it is not enough, and that she must promise him that she will do as he commands and kill him. His symptoms seem to be getting worse and he seems to be experiencing more fatigue and paranoia.

As for the painting, it is true that is is 500 years old but the carving is brand new. Apparently there is someone writing the formula all over the world.

We see Raina again in the final scene, who gets into her car on her way to catch a flight when she is attacked by Dr. Whitehall and his team. They are after the Obelisk, and she has 48 hours to deliver it, otherwise, her fate will be in the hands of Dr. Whitehall. He brags that he once operated on a woman for a week, but it was so hard to keep her conscious (the human body has the unfortunate reaction of blacking out when inflicted with too much pain), but that this time, he knows he can do better.
