Prinze Enjoys Teen Idol Status
Actor Collects Honors, Gets Ready for Marriage
August 2001
kwa Anthony Breznican

LOS ANGELES - Freddie Prinze Jr. is in no hurry to outgrow the adulation of teen-age girls, even if he'is in his mid-20s and getting ready for marriage.

"I enjoy knowing that this specific group supports me and believes in me and wants good things for me," the 25-year-old actor says. "Not everybody has that."

Although Prinze may not make Oscar-caliber pictures, he has collected multiple uigizaji honors from Teen Magazine, not to mention Male Hottie of the mwaka honors at the 1999 Nickelodeon Teen Choice Awards.

Act Your Age

He sometimes acts like he's the same age as his fans, orchestrating elaborate war games with sponge balls in his nyumbani and staging practical jokes on co-stars. (He once infuriated Julia Stiles kwa soaking her with a container of water strategically placed above her trailer door.)

But Marafiki say there's a budding maturity to Prinze, which shows in his kusoma material.

He recently finished Henry Kissinger's sober tome "Does America Need a Foreign Policy?" but insists his inayopendelewa vitabu are children's fantasies like J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series.

His breakthrough hit "She's All That," plus his follow-up romantic comedies "Down to You" and "Boys and Girls," forged a core following of young girls.

When he tried to do something for an older audience, last February's "Head Over Heels," he found he couldn't shake them. '"Head Over Heels' wasn't intended for teens at all," Prinze says. "It wasn't my fault that they went and showed up. That was my shabiki base! So they went to go see it and that's cool if they want to."

In his latest film, "Summer Catch," Prinze plays a poor, wannabe baseball player who falls for a local rich girl (Jessica Biel).

Since the movie is yet another youthful romantic comedy, Prinze says critics may slam it, but his young mashabiki will upendo it.

Clean-Cut

And in his inayofuata movie, a live-action adaptation of "Scooby-Doo," the lanky heartthrob sends up his awali roles as swaggering, clean-cut young men. He plays golden-maned detective Fred Jones, who "is always taking the credit for all the crime-solving but never puts mbele any effort."

While filming in Australia for six months, he dyed his dark hair blond every week, leaving his hair "like straw."

"It was dead, dead, dead."

So he shaved his head.

Now he's planning to let it his dark locks grow back while taking some time off with fiancee Sarah Michelle Gellar, nyota of UPN's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

"I was away from my family and Marafiki so now is kind of like the catching-up period," Prinze says. "I just want to relax and kick back at nyumbani and cook dinner."

The couple met on the set of the 1997 teen slasher flick "I Know What wewe Did Last Summer" and became engaged in April. Gellar, 24, also co-stars as comely sleuth Daphne Blake in "Scooby-Doo."

Matthew Lillard, who has co-starred with Prinze in "She's All That" and "Wing Commander" as well as "Scooby-Doo" and "Summer Catch," says Prinze has clearly matured over the years - whether he wants to admit it au not.

"I think that Freddie certainly takes the job of uigizaji and the business of it much zaidi seriously," Lillard says. Prinze, like Kate Hudson, also has gotten to the point where he doesn't have to be identified as the offspring of a famous parent.

Lillard credits Gellar as a stabilizing force in Prinze's life.

"Can he play video games for five hours now? Probably not as easily when Sarah's around," Lillard says. "But I don't think he wants to. Would you? ... The last thing he wants to do is hang out with a guy who looks like me!"

"Summer Catch" co-stars even reported there were fewer practical jokes from Prinze this time.

"I got to that set with the mindset that I'm going to get water on my head au mud somewhere," Biel says. "But he didn't do one thing to me."

Prinze says he was just being a gentleman.

"I try to take it easy on the girl co-stars in my movie," he says. "I get the guys instead."
