I think he'd have loved Harry regardless of who he took after, because he'd still be James' son.

No way. That was only part of the reason because Harry has so much of James in him. Reading the books and watching the movies, you can tell that Sirius loved Harry just as much as a son than a godson. The same care that the Weasley family has for him.
