They seem to have opposing world views and neither gives as much thought as they probably should into the other's way of thinking. For Hermione, if a book says something doesn't exist she'll believe it and it wont occur to her a book could be wrong, if Luna hears something could exist, she assumes it does and it doesn't seem to occur to her to look into the reasons it might not. There's also a softness to Luna, while I imagine Hermione quite shrill and teacher-like. Everything about the way she views and experiences the world seems different to how Hermione goes about it. To me, Luna is Hermione's opposite, while Pansy is just a random girl who isn't much like her. There's more, but really evil is the most significant thing.) I think Pansy is an anti-Hermione in that she is against Hermione. Luna is good, like Hermione. So why is she the anti-Hermione? Both are intelligent, but in completely different ways. Luna is extremely creative and open-minded, while Hermione is logical and narrow-minded. However, Luna is gullible, while Hermione is skeptic. Luna daydreams most of the time, and lives almost like she is in her own dreamland. Hermione studies and lives based on proven facts and thinks before she does or says anything. Luna is very tranquil and accepting, while Hermione is demanding and determined. Luna has a very short attention span, while Hermione's attention span is incredible. Hermione is also more outspoken, while Luna is more... how would I describe it? Metaphorically dreamy? I'm not sure. Either way. Hermione is very independent, and doesn't do whatever it takes to get in with the right people. She's perfectly happy - and willing! - to extend a helping hand.
