KataraLover picked Anne Hathaway's (film 'Les Miserable'):
Susan's voice is BY FAR superior to Anne's. However, what makes Anne's the best version of this song is the emotion she puts behind it. She has the true suffering that the song is supposed to have behind it. Plus the fact that her version takes place after she becomes a prostitute unlike the in the show after she gets fired makes it more powerful. Anne's voice is nowhere near as amazing as Susan's or the voices of other women who have sung this song, but they're also nowhere near Anne's powerful emotion that makes her one of the best actresses of ALL TIME! Plus Anne does have a good voice, not amazing by any means, but her being able to scream, sob, and break down while staying on key is impressive. She did more than just sing the words, she felt the words, which is more powerful than just having an amazing voice and singing the song.

glelsey picked Susan Boyle's (Britain's Got Talent):
This is one of the few musical songs that I've never enjoyed in context as much as on its own.

I've seen both the movie and the West End production of Les Mis, and of course the singers themselves were great in both, but I'm honestly not keen on this particular song being sang in its respective setting with the emotions added to it. The character always has to sing it quite weakly due to what's just happened to her in the story. Whereas I feel like this is a song that is better off as its own performance, and sang powerfully. Weird for me to have an opinion like that, but for this one song I feel like it doesn't really go with the context of the story.

What KataraLover said, though I disagree with Anne's voice being just good. I think her voice is absolutely amazing.

^^^I agree. That's how I feel about "Evermore" from Beauty and the Beast 2017. Josh Groban is a better singer than Dan Stevens, but the raw emotion that Dan Stevens put into the song and the fact that he had to act and sing at the same time is why I prefer his version to Josh's.
