I just couldn’t believe it. I knew Dean hadn’t acted like himself in a few days and that he was thinking about giving up but I never thought he would actually take the Impala and just… flee. It was not like my brother to do something like that. He had always been the strong one of us and the one who always kept it together, even in a crisis. I knew that “a crisis” was a big understatement to the crap that was happening now; it was the end of the world, literally. But we were supposed to do this together; it was supposed to be him and me against the world, those were his words. I knew he felt betrayed kwa me and ever since our little trip to heaven he’d been slowly but surely giving up. When he threw the mkufu I gave him so many years zamani in the trash I felt something change between us.
I wondered if things could ever go back to the way they were before, when we would do anything for one another. When we were real brothers.
“Balls! That idjit!” Bobby’s exclamation startled me and awoke me from my thoughts. “Balls” and ”Idjit” were the only words Bobby had used for the last fifteen dakika and it was starting to get on my nerves. I knew he was as chocked as me when I dropped the bomb about Dean giving up, but he really wasn’t helping at all. We needed a plan, we had to do something fast. This was not the time for one syllable sentences. If Bobby could have, he would have paced back and forth across the room but giving the circumstances and the fact that he was in a wheelchair all he could do was sit behind his dawati with a furious look on his face. I myself was pacing.
“I know that Dean’s an idiot Bobby, but we need to pull our thumbs out of our asses and do something!”
“There’s nothing we can do.” His rugged voice came from a dark corner in Bobby’s kitchen. It made me freeze in the middle of a step and Bobby startled. He stepped out from the shadows and into the light of the living room and both Bobby and I relaxed. Castiel always popped kwa unannounced and at first it actually scared me a bit but I got used to it. What annoyed both me and Dean on the other hand was when Castiel disappeared at the most inconvenient moments.
I looked at the Angel in puzzlement.
“What do wewe mean?” I asked him. Cas sighed aloud and went over to the only window in the room and stared outside. The rain was smattering against the glass and thunder sounded somewhere in the distance. Suddenly everything became illuminated kwa a flash and the thunder started to rumble.
“Well firstly, wewe can’t find Dean so wewe can’t talk him out of saying yes to Michael. Unless he picks up his phone, which I doubt he will.” The familiar voice sent chills down my spine and I went cold all over. As I turned around and met Lucifer’s gaze he gave me a little smile. Cas was already staring at him with a flaring look which looked as if it could burn down a whole building and Bobby’s jaw was at the floor. Lucifer continued:
“Secondly, even if wewe could speak to him there is nothing wewe could say that would make him change his mind. My brother will possess him; it’s just a matter of time.” A low hissing sound came from Castiel and his gaze turned ice cold.
“Dean wouldn’t do that”, he alisema with a stone cold voice. I knew the bond between Cas and Dean was special, that they were closer than most friends, but now I couldn’t help but wonder if there was something else. Maybe their bond was zaidi than just a Marafiki bond. It was a family bond. I hadn’t seen this kind of protectiveness from Castiel before… Lucifer’s voice interrupted my thoughts. “And when I go up against my brother I would really like a new strong vessel that doesn’t fall apart on me. So what do wewe say, Sam?” Lucifer threw out his arms in an inviting gesture, as if to hug someone “Wanna help out?”
The silence that followed was filled with tension. No one spoke. No one moved. We just stood there. Everyone was waiting.
Eventually Lucifer broke the silence with a shake of his head and a sigh.
“You know what Sam? I’ve tried this the easy way but wewe still won’t help me. I’ve tried to bargain with wewe but wewe still turn me down.” The Devil looked genuinely sad. “I’m so sorry it had to come to this, I really am.” Before I even had time to react Bobby had started screaming. It was not like a usual scream of pain, it was a moyo wrenching cry that only a person in true agony could make. Castiel, who never showed pain, started screaming as well and he had tears forming in his eyes.
“Stop! Please stop whatever you’re doing to them! Stop!” I yelled at Lucifer as Bobby fell out of his wheelchair and lay twitching on the floor. Castiel on the other hand was hovering above the ground and he aswell was twitching, trying to get away from some invisible force that was hurting him.
“Only wewe can make it stop Sam. wewe know the magic word, use it,” Lucifer alisema with a sly smile. “Or else I’ll keep stripping your Angel friend of his wings and your pretend daddy will have scissors jammed into him until he feels like a Swiss cheese. And wewe know what the good part is? I decide when they die and I have a lot of time to kill.”
The sound of their screams rang in my ears and the volume kept increasing. My breathing came quickly now and the sweat was running. I was the only one who could make this hell stop. Lucifer had gotten sick and tired of this game and so had I. If Dean was giving up, why couldn’t I?
Lucifer saw it in my eyes and he gave me a cunning smile. Before I even had time to say anything the chaos was gone and the room was silent. No zaidi screams. Cas fell to the ground in a heap and Bobby’s unconscious body was being lifted back into his wheelchair.
“Don’t worry, they’re alive. They just need time to rest.” My face was wet kwa tears and I could feel a lump in my throat. I was about to give him the answer he was waiting for when something suddenly hit me.
“How did wewe find us? Castiel has branded both my and Dean’s ribs.” Lucifer chuckled.
“A magician never reveals his tricks.” Lucifer cocked his head to the side and looked at me.
“Now Sammy, are wewe ready?”
I took a deep breath and uttered one, single word.
The word was “yes”.
