WHAT MEETS THE EYE

02. TRIP TO DESTINATION

Friday morning, unusually dark, grey and rainy for Phoenix. Girls got up pretty early, ate breakfast, got dressed and all eager and ready for their one siku drive off to Forks. They decided to go with Beth's car, a new shiny black Jeep Compass, ideal for journeys, they have all the room they need in that car. Taylor and Rachel used to tease Beth when she bought that car. It's enormous and Beth is such a small tiny creature. She used to say that that car is a reflection of her personality, her little mbwa mwitu cub, strong and fast like a wolf, but still gentle and sleek like she is. Beth was first to drive then they planned to take turns when she gets tired.
"Beth, come on honey, we're all set, let's go!!!"- Rachel shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
"Just a minute, I'm comin'!!!"
"Do wewe always....does she always have to be the one to be waited for, gosh!"- Rachel tried to shout to her but Taylor stopped her, just to keep the good mood.
And there she was, finally, running from the juu of the stairs, with her bag in one hand and the car keys in the other. Her almost short orange-reddish hair looked messier than usual. She wore blue jeans, white shati with sleeves that were little over her elbows, dark grey vest on juu of it, and a little silver shoes, like ballerina.
"Sorry guys, I couldn't find my car keys!"- she alisema in an apologetic tone.
"Oh we know. Let's go!"- Rachel smiled and winked at Taylor.
They put their bags in a trunk, one at the time, in prefect order, from biggest to the smallest, then got into the car. With Beth behind the wheel which meant loud rock muziki big part of the way. Taylor sat on a passengers kiti, kiti cha inayofuata to her and Rachel behind them, she liked being comfortable, even to fall asleep during the journey. Girls knew what are they getting into when they agreed to go with Beth's car, and letting her drive first early in the morning.

"It's onyesha time!"- Beth smiled at them and started the engine, and they were on their way to Forks.
"A little muziki for the road, ha girls, what do wewe say?!"
"Of course Beth, we were counting on that."- Rachel chuckled.
She turned on the CD player, and the muziki begun to play, the song Run from Snow Patrol was playing, Beth really loved that song, she alisema that that particular song makes her sad and happy in the same time. Rachel and Taylor didn't mind the song, they liked it too.

"There's something magical about that song, isn't it?"- Beth asked expecting a positive answer.
"Is that a swali au a statement?"- Taylor asked through a smile.
"A bit of both I guess."- and they all laughed.
"Well we know wewe honey, but it's nice to start a siku with this song instead with that usual stuff that u listen to when wewe drive. I mean we can hear wewe all the way from that curve when You're coming home."- Rachel teased a bit.
"I know!"- Beth giggled.
"That's why I made a brand new CD with the songs we all love. Am I not a sweetheart?!"
"I know I am, onyesha a little gratitude here."- she whispered to herself.
"Oh sweetie, thank You, wewe know wewe are!"- Taylor was sincerely grateful.
So the drive kept on, but Beth wasn't tired, she just kept driving and imba her inayopendelewa songs, she used to say that nothing is hard work with a little bit of music. A few hours have passed by, Rachel fell asleep in the back seat, with her soft long brown hair she looked like an angel, so peaceful while sleeping. Rain was still pouring outside, not so great siku for a road trip as the weather is concerned, it seemed like there is no end of the black and grey clouds above. Everything looked so sad, even Taylor looked zaidi sad and troubled than usual. But nothing could break Beth's spirit, driving away alone was good enough fun for her, so tried to talk to Taylor and make her laugh as much as it was possible. Sometimes she was laughing her eyes out, and in the other moment she had that serious sad face again. She often made the girls sad only kwa looking at her, as she held her cup of chai in the evening, almost every evening, sitting in her chair in their little library. She used to lean back in her early 20th century french style black armchair, with her head tilted to the left. Her shiny black shoulder length hair falling on one side, and her eyes so empty, soulless stare through the window, like waiting for her long Lost upendo that went away and promised to came back someday, but he never did. They both tried so hard to soften her moyo and soul, they loved her so much, to tell her that everything will be okay, and that she doesn't have to feel lonely, au scared au even sad, they were there for her, her friends, her sisters, her family. It was long behind lunch time, so they got pretty hungry kwa now and decided to find a restaurant, eat something and rest for a bit. They reached LA and kept going on road I-5 toward Sacramento, and finally found a small restaurant kwa the road, with a funny name.
"Wow, this is awkward. From dusk 'till dawn."- Taylor read the glowing sign on the juu of the house that the restaurant was in.
"Well maybe, if we're lucky, some strange looking people will be there, strippers with snakes, and bunch of Wanyonya damu will try to eat us alive!"- Rachel teased Beth again for the Wanyonya damu and giggled.
"Oh, don't be silly Rach, all the Wanyonya damu are asleep now, no one will eat us alive, at least not during daylight."- she answered in the same tone.
"Come on wewe two, enough of Wanyonya damu and other unearthly beings and let's go eat, I'm starving."- Taylor added walking toward the restaurant.
"Well, technically Wanyonya damu are not unearthly....."
"Yes, yes, okay we get it, think of the food, will You!"- Rachel interrupted Beth in her most intellectual explanation about vampires.
They got in, it was mostly usual diner actually, nothing fancy, a few old wooden tables with old fashioned tablecloths and matching chairs. a few truckers were in, having their meal and drinking coffee. The three of them found a meza, jedwali kwa the window and sat down, and an old woman, with a silly apron, red with white dots and laced at the ridges, supposedly to be a waitress approached them. She took their order and poured them three cups of coffee. They ate, and the journey continued, but Taylor sat behind the wheel this time, with Rachel in the passengers seat, and Beth in the back seat, now she wanted to get some sleep. chakula always made her sleepy.
It was almost completely dark, and the storm was getting wilder, thunders louder. They were all a bit scared, trying to find a motel kwa the road to settle down for the night, but all the motels on the maps were gone, none of them as they supposed to be, it felt to them like the were the only one in the world, like in some kind of a horror movie.
The thunders were getting closer, lightnings so strong and bright, it felt like it's siku when lightning struck, the girls were getting even zaidi scared. They pulled over for a moment, it stared to rain a bit. They saw a car lights coming from the opposite way, Taylor got out of the car hoping to stop that car and ask if they know how far is there to a some kind of a motel au anything, restaurant, gas station au whatever with roof and door. Other two followed her out.
She had no luck in attracting their attention, the car just rushed kwa them as if they don't even exist. But they managed to attract a horrible unearthly force to themselves. A lightning!
They didn't even expect that would ever happen to them. Taylor opened a little umbrella that she took from Beth car, with metal point and handle, and with Rachel and Beth under each arm. They were on the open road with nothing around them but concrete and plain grounds, not even a tree. And the laws of nature took their part. The just fell unconscious on the ground kwa the car with an awful scream.
dakika passed, Taylor opened her eyes, with a loud moan she got up, had a terrible headache. But it got worse when she saw at the first look lifeless bodies of her friends, two persons that she could not continue to live without. It was pouring kwa then, she remembered what happened, and she started to scream and cry so loud with pain, the scene in front of her caused that pain. She was always the strong one, but to live through something that not one living person could, a lightning strike, that was nearly impossible. She finally got up to her senses and approached her Marafiki that were lying still on the ground, touched both of their necks in tafuta of a heartbeat. They were both still alive, barely, but still. She was weak, but managed to put them both, one kwa one in the car, hoping for a miracle. well she was a doctor after all, then remembered her medical school and what to do in situations like this. She did her best. Beth, who was half sitting, half lying in the passengers seat, opened her eyes in fear and with disorientation, completely numb in the moment. Taylor hugged her so hard and kissed her, and explained to her through tears what happened, in that moment Rachel was coming to her senses.
"It's okay sweetie, we're here, I upendo wewe both."- Taylor whispered through tears.
This was a situation for a guinness book of records. All three of them, got struck kwa a lightning, and lived to tell the tale, with some minor consequences, like headache and feeling of disorientation. That was a traumatic experience for them that will follow them through life. They sat in the car celebrating that they were still alive, wondering how that actually happened, for about an hour. Taylor decided that is time to continue a tafuta for a room, so she started the engine. Storm became zaidi quiet with every moment, and eventually stopped, it was so quiet then, only wind and car engine roar could be heard. It was late, a couple of miles up north they found a tiny motel kwa the road, lucky for them, it was vacant. They asked for one room, not wanting to separate for the night. What they just lived through it's not weird at all.
When they came into the room, they sat on one big bed, they relaxed a bit. and at that moment emotions burst through, silent tears followed kwa a loud cries. They comforted each other, lucky that they are still together, but Taylor absolutely broke, she was shaking and crying, they were not able to calm her down. Their attempt to do so interrupted yet another weird and unexpected thing. A TV set mysteriously burst into flames. Rachel and Beth managed to put off the moto with a moto extinguisher, cursing the motel, storm and bad electricity. Taylor finally calmed down, and fell asleep, Rachel turned off the lights, and they followed Taylor as well. It was a long day, they got through a lot, they deserved to rest and dream of colorful places and happy people.
It was already morning, time to continue with the drive. They decided that Rachel will be driving, she was the only one that had no headache, so she could keep her eyes and mind on the road, Taylor slept in the back seat.
That was the most quiet 7 hours drive ever, they didn't say a word, no muziki no nothing. Taylor woke up kwa the time they finally reached Forks, they passed the sign that alisema THE CITY OF FORKS, WELCOME.
"Imagine this, we're finally here, alive and in one piece. Everything is so grey....so sad, and quiet."- Beth shared her disappointment with girls. "I sure hope something interesting will happen here."- she added.
They all looked at each other with sadness in their eyes, hoping for a ray of sunshine.
