But then with Lost I just started watching the DVDs, and now I feel all left out because everyone's talking about it and I'm only half way through!
It's great when you can watch whole series or season in few days. Not waiting.
But it also steals some fun, excitment. You know, it's why I'm on fanpop, to be able to talk about shows I watch and wondering what is going to happen later ;p
Personally,in case i get the DVD`s,i`ll watch an entire season in 3 days. Which is NOT good because simply i don`t have the necessarry time to fully realise what i like/don`t like, certain storylines and basic stuff about that show.
So when you follow the show, epi by epi...Idk...i think it`s definitely better than watch it all together. Gives you time to think about it rather than quickly "sum it up".
For me the biggest thing it depends on is probably what kind of show it is. If it's a more smart or strange show (like Dollhouse or something) I'd prefer watching as it airs, because it raises more theories, questions and discussions with fellow fans, and gives you time to process plots. With something more lighthearted or generic I'd probably be happier getting to watch on dvd.
I know when House ends it will be something I will remember for a long time. I've been watching it since I was 13 years old. It will mean a lot because the show was with me throughout all of my teenage years and has been such a big part of my life (sad but true).
It's like a journey. Watching it on Dvds or the internet later doesn't give you that same feeling (I know because I finally trying to watch LOST and the epicness isn't there for me).
For the majority of shows that I watch it's been a mixture of these two, like you mentioned Lost, I started watching the DVD's and got caught up towards the beginning of season 3. It's really obvious the change between them, the excitement you get from being able to think of what's going to happen the next week. Plus, there's more of a sense of fan-camaraderie that comes from watching at the same time as other people.
Same with TBBT - I discovered S1 on DVD but watched S2 and S3 on TV.
I watched OTH from the beginning until it began to suck majorly.
I don't mind either way! I honestly enjoy both ways for different reasons.
But that's the only show I prefer to watch on dvd.
There are lots of things you get out of watching the show as it airs that you just don't get when you watch a few episodes in a row or watch it years after it aired. One reason is as sophialover said that you don't get the time to really process what happened in the episode and you don't have time to try to figure out what you think it all meant and what will happen next. Seasons are created to be shown over the span of a few months... not a few hours or even a few days--- so it sort of ruins the momentum of the show.
Also, while I know that there are PLENTY of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans who love the show just as much as I do and are just as devoted to the show as I am and some of them have only seen the show for the first time this year... but the experiences are just slightly different when you watch it when it airs. Neither is better or worse... it's just different and depends on your preference. When I watched BtVS in the 90s I didn't think the outfits they wore were strange because they were normal for living in California in the 90s. But I only realize how badly they are dressed now because fans who just started watching the show point it out to me. Buffy and Cordelia were supposed to be really stylish characters but if you watch them in the first season now (in 2010) they look sooo outdated because they were wearing trendy outfits for 1996 when the show was first filmed.
Also, I loved watching all the BtVS related commercials... the WB used to have great commercials with lots of WB cast members, and Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz made BtVS 1-800-COLLECT commericals...etc.
And the music played in the episode previews and commericals really impacted me.
For example: I cannot help but cry when I hear the song "Goodbye to you" by Michelle Branch. BtVS fans who watch the show on dvd would recognize this song as it's played during a sad scene in the episode Tabula Rasa... but fans who watched the show when it aired recognized it for that reason plus the song was played in the background of ALL the commericals advertising the end of the series. I hear that song and I hear the voiceover saying that Buffy is going to face her biggest battle...and announcing the show is coming to end and it will be the series finale. I would see that commercial over and over for weeks before the finale aired... so I hear that song and I automatically think of the show ending and it makes me want to cry.
You just get a different experience when you watch it when it airs than when you watch on dvd... some shows are better to watch on dvd but I almost always prefer to watch it when it airs.
