CHAPTER 1
“Selena Forrest,” the teacher called.
“Here,” I answered back and flashed her a winning smile. But she just ignored me, they always do. Who would smile back at the weird girl who is failing in every subject? Who would smile at the loser girl who lives only with her drunken uncle? Who would even talk to the girl who always stands up for the limping nerd, Lauren? That’s right, no one. Lauren is my only friend.
“Selena Forrest.”
“Here,” I said, then blushed bright red when I realized that she was done with attendance. She was the substitute teacher in Science, the one subject I couldn’t stand.
“Come with me,” She continued.
“Okay,” I responded quietly, still embarrassed from my slip up. I followed her to the hallway, it was empty. I looked back at her, but she was gone. In her place was a woman with long snakes for arms that wrapped all around her body. She growled, a low menacing sound, I backed up slowly, terrified.
“Come here, child.” She said, but now her voice was different, scratchy and lower, chilling to the bone. I stood frozen, my back against the wall, when clueless Lauren walked out. She squeaked when she saw our teacher transformed into a monster, and then ran off. Of course Lauren would be too scared to do anything, at best she would call for help, I could only hope.
The monster teacher growled again, and took a step closer, staring me down with hungry eyes. I decided my best option was to run and call the police, since there was nothing to fight with, and then I knew where to go. I darted to the left and sprinted down the hallway, towards the gym. As I passed the classrooms, not one student looked my way, which was unusual because I go to a special private school for kids with dyslexia and attention problems, kids that would notice a girl running for her life down a hallway, chased kwa a snarling beast.
I finally reached the gym where, thankfully, there was not a class. If the science wing had not been so close to the gym, I would be dead kwa now. I ran into the gym closet and pulled out a bow and arrow set, the only sport I’m good at. I carefully strung an arrow and waited for her to catch up. Within sekunde she was there and I let go of the string aimed directly at her heart. It should’ve killed her, but it only seemed to make her angrier. I shot arrow after arrow until I was down to my last one. None of the arrows did much to her, sometimes, when I got a lucky shot, it would injure her slightly, but nothing fatal. I didn’t understand why, these were sharp metal arrows that would kill a human with just one shot. Whatever this was, it obviously wasn’t human.
I aimed my last arrow straight at her nose, and drew the bow. The arrow shot like lightning towards her face, but at the last sekunde she turned her head and the arrow went in one ear and out the other. The monster dissolved into sand and disappeared. I realized that my lucky shot had happened because she had turned to look at something, so I walked over to see who, au what, it was. I found a girl with long, curly blond hair and intimidating gray eyes and a boy (ick!) with jet-black hair and green eyes the color of the sea. They each had a streak of gray in their hair, the same spot, and the same color. Something moved behind them and out came Lauren! I ran up to her and hugged her as hard as I could.
“Who are these people and what just happened?” I asked her.
“Annabeth and Percy will explain everything soon, I promise.” I assumed that the girl was Annabeth and the boy was Percy.
“I’m Annabeth,” the blond girl said, “come with us and we will answer all your questions.”
“Okay,” I said, still unsure, but what did I have to lose. I followed Annabeth outside the school to three horses. But they weren’t just horses, these had wings.
“They’re Pegasus,” Annabeth told me, as if kusoma my mind. That didn’t make sense to me, but I had just seen my substitute teacher turn into a monster, and then reduced her to sand, a lot of things didn’t make sense right now.
Percy helped me on my Pegasus, which annoyed me. Why can’t he let Annabeth and me deal with this ourselves, boys are so self centered. As we were flying Annabeth informed me that we were going to a place called Camp Half-Blood where we would meet Lauren and everything would be explained. We finally neared the camp and as we passed the Empire State Building, I realized that we were in New York. In under an saa we had traveled across the country, all the way from Nevada.
We landed right inayofuata to a large pine mti at the juu of the hill.
“This,” Annabeth alisema dramatically, “is Camp Half-Blood.”
