Prim was burned to death kwa a flamable bomb that Gale and Beetee created in District 13. President Coin sent Prim out as the leader of a squadron of soldiers fighting againts the Capitol, and since Coin didn't like Katniss, she sent in planes with the bombs in them to kill Prim to put Katniss in her place.

The bomb was also sent to kill Capitol children, but yeah mainly as Coin's revenge on Katniss.
