Mitchell Owens - Child Find of America

Four-year-old Mitchell Owens was last seen on February 3, 1983 in Menlo Park, California. His mother, Ora was assaulted by a man who had broken into the family apartment late at night. Two of her sons, Antwan and Martay slept through the attack, but Mitchell woke up and witnessed his mom being attacked.

Ora screamed at Mitchell to run away, but the assailant tried to strangle her with a telephone cord and she passed out. Neighbors discovered Ora the next day and she was taken to a hospital where she regained consciouness and spent weeks there recovering from her attack. She believes that she met the assailant the night before at the Enlisted Men's Club at Moffett Field Naval Air Station in Mountain View, California who offered to buy her a drink, but she declined. She thinks that the man followed her home and drove away when she reached her door.

Another possible suspect in Mitchell's disappearance is a man who knocked on Ora's door a few hours before the attack, identifying himself as a police officer who asked about a report she made about a stolen purse the month before; however, the Menlo Park Police Department has no record of a police officer stopping by the Owens home on that day.

In the years after Mitchell's disappearance, Ora received phone calls from an unidentified male who repeatedly threatened to take her other two sons, but it is unknown if they are related to his case. She has criticized the police investigation into Mitchell's disappearance, stating that the investigators didn't look for him hard enough before the family is poor and African-American. Initially, the local police listed Mitchell as a runaway juvenile and refused to take action to locate him.

Mitchell's case is classified as a non-family abduction.
