On April 25, 2002, two-year-old Jahi Turner's stepfather, Tieray Jones reported him missing from a playground in the Golden Hill Area of San Diego, California.

Tieray stated that he left Jahi near the sandbox while he went to buy a soda from a nearby vending machine and when he returned, Jahi was gone. After searching for him for 15 to 20 minutes, Tieray called the police to report him missing.

When the authorities searched the playground and spoke to witnesses, they were unable to find any evidence that Jahi was actually at the playground at all. The last confirmed sighting of Jahi took place on April 22, 2002 when a neighbor saw him playing at the playground of the apartment complex he lived at with Tieray.

On April 23, 2002, Tameka called Tieray from her ship at 11:00 a.m. and asked to speak to Jahi which she did. Tieray told her that Jahi had wet the bed and had a small bump on his head from falling off the bed, but said that the injury was "no big deal".

On April 24, 2002 (the day before Jahi went missing), multiple witnesses saw Tieray carry one or more large trash bags to the apartment complex dumpster. It's unknown what was in the trash bags because the contents of the dumpster were hauled away before Jahi's disappearance was reported.

Tieray also made numerous phone calls to people, asking them for money during the time that he told the police he was either having lunch with Jahi, napping with Jahi and walking to the park with him. Two hours before Jahi was reported missing, Tieray left two phone messages for Tameka and spoke to an ex-girlfriend for half an hour. He called the police six minutes later to report Jahi's disappearance.

In the summer of 2002, Tieray and Tameka hired a retired social worker to help look for Jahi. A private investigator was later hired and discovered numerous inconsistencies in Tierney's story. Afterwards, they moved back to Maryland and ended their relationship.

In 2004, Tiernay was arrested for attempted murder, assault and other charges in connection with an incident that occurred in Frederick, Maryland.

In January of 2005, he was additionally charged with second-degree murder in the case of a man from Maryland who was shot at an apartment complex. The charges were later dropped against him. Tiernay pled no contest to assault in another case and was sentenced to 5 years in prison.

In 2016, Tiernay was arrested with murder and child abuse causing death in Jahi's disappearance; however, the jury was unable to reach a verdict in the trial and a mistrial was declared. A judge later dismissed the murder charge against him.

Jahi's case is classified as an endangered missing person and foul play is suspected due to the circumstances involved in it.
