On March 2, 1996, 14-year-old Jeffrey Klugness's mother, Susan was found murdered in the family's mobile home in Bonney Lake, Washington from a blow to the head.

When Jeffrey's father, Ron came home from work, he found the door to their house unlocked and the TV on. He discovered Susan's body slumped against their bedroom door and Jeffrey missing. Ron's gold watch and about $700 in cash were also missing from home. Prior to Susan's death, she and Ron had issues in their marriage and had separated once before.

A handyman named Marty Malcolm claimed that he discovered Susan's body on the day she was murdered, but he panicked and drove away in Susan's maroon-colored Toyota Camry station wagon. The car was found abandoned the next day at a convenience store in Auburn, Washington. Marty turned himself into the police and admitted to withdrawing $300 from Susan's bank account on the day of her death, spending it all at the Muckleshoot Casino that night.

Marty was later charged with possession of stolen property and sentenced to 45 days in jail. He refuses to cooperate with Susan's murder case and Jeffrey's disappearance. Reportedly, neighbors told investigators that Marty was last seen with Jeffrey before he went missing. Marty said that he took Jeffrey to get a haircut at 11:30 the morning he went missing.

Shortly afterwards, a surveillance camera from a drive-through ATM showed Marty driving Susan's car and a witness waiting in line said that she saw a "young person" inside the car with him. Marty said that he took Jeffrey home at 12:30 that afternoon and left to run an errand. He returned to the Klungness's house at 2:00 PM where he discovered Susan dead and Jeffrey missing.

Marty has not been charged in connection with Jeffrey and Susan's cases. Jeffrey's disappearance is classified as an endangered missing person. Jeffrey was last seen wearing a green short-sleeved shirt, green pants and sneakers. He slouches when he walks, has dyslexia and a speech impediment.
