As I drove closer to the school, I could start hearing eveyone's thoughts. As of now it was at a soft roar of confused and ainxous voices, but as we edged closer they became louder. Jessica Stanly's thought cought my attetion almost imedietly. Woah. He's huge. I could see Jacob Black standing against his motorcycle. Waiting.
My grip on the steering wheel tightened and Bella seemed to notice. "If I asked yout to do something for me, would wewe trust me?" I asked her. I tried to hide the slight edge in my voice.
She stared at me as I listened for more. Where did he come from? Wonder who's gonna' get their butt kicked? He's scary.
I heard her moyo rate quicken and she answered carefully. "That depends."
We pulled into the now crowded parking lot. "I was afraid wewe would say that."
"What do wewe want me to do, Edward." She asked.
I pulled into my parking space and turned off the engine. "I want wewe to stay in the car." I want wewe to run. I don't want him near you.
"Wait here untill I come back from you."
"But...why." She looked ahead. "Oh."
I followed her gaze and met his. Filthy bloodsucker. wewe lied to her! I should kill you! I would kill wewe if it wouldn't kill Bella.
"You jumped to the wrong conclusion last night." I spoke quietly. "He asked about school because he knew I would be where wewe were. He was looking for a place to talk to me. A place with witnesses."
"I'm not staying in the car." She protested.
Why do I even bother? "Of course no. Well, let's get this over with.
As we walked toward him I grabbed Bella's hand. I wasn't letting her go as long as he was here.
As we approached, students started to slow and even stop in some places.
"I bet five on the big one." Tyler whispered to another student I didn't recognize.
I placed myself directly infront of Jacob and pulled Bella behind me slightly. Precausions.
"You could have called us," My voice was stern and sure.
"Sorry." He gruffed. "I don't have any leeches on my speed dial."
"You could have reached me at Bella's house, of course."
I'd rather give wewe out in public. zaidi embarrassing for you.
"This isn't hardly the place, Jacob. We could discuss the later." When I could prove wewe wrong.
"Sure, I'll stop kwa your crypt after school." He snorted. "What's wrong with now?"
I looked around at everyone who had stopped at the first sight of a brawl.
"I already know what wewe came to say. Message delivered. Consider us warned." Que Bella. I looked down at her waiting.
"Warned? What are wewe talking about?" She asked blankly.
"You didn't tell her?" He mocked a suprised face. Bella fell for it. "What, are wewe afraid she will take our side?" wewe are.
"Please drop it, Jacob."
"What don't I know? Edward?" Bella asked. Pleading for an answer.
wewe lied to her. And, wewe left her. Broken. I was the one who gave her, her life back, while wewe sat back and watched the world turn. I watched her suffer! And I put her back together!
"Jake?" Of course she would ask Jacob. He would tell her.
He looked down at Bella. "He didn't tell wewe that his big...brother crossed the line Saturday night?" His eys quickley flickered back to mine. "Paul was totally justified in-"
"It was no-man's land!" I hissed.
"Was not!" He gowled back.
His hands started trembling. I pulled Bella closer to me as he shook his head and sucked in two breaths.
"Emmet and Paul?" Bella asked. Fully concerned with both parties. "What happened? Were they fighting." Her voice rose with panic. "Why? Did Paul get hurt?"
Paul. Stupid mutts. "Do one fought," I comforted her. "No one got hurt. Don't be anxious."
I should....I would kill you! What kind of soul mate are you! wewe lie! wewe take her away from what is really happeneing! You're not protecting her! You're hurting her!
"You didn't tell her anything at all, did you? Is that why wewe took her away? So she wouldn't know that-?"
"Leave now." I hissed and my eyes iced over. I could feel the venom pool in my mouth.
"Why haven't yuo told her?" He raised his eye brows making no other move.
Bella didn't ask any maswali this time. I knew what she was doing. She was figuring it all out in her head.
wewe should have told her. wewe shouldn't have let her find out like this.
Bella's breathing turned into quick gasps as it all unfolded in her head. What I would give to know what she was thinking.
I would have told her. Face it. I'm better for her. I'm a part of her life now whether wewe like it au not. She loves me. Maybe even almost as mush as she loves you.
"She came back for me." Bella choked.
I pulled her to me, still keeping the distance between her and Jacob. "It's fine." I stroked her hair. "It's fine. I'll never let her get close to you, it's fine."
Lies. Jacob glared at me.
"Does that answer your question, mongrel?"
"You don't think she has a right to know? It's her life."
"Why would she be frightend if she was never in danger?" I challenged.
"Better frighted than lied to."
I whiped the tears off her cheek. "Do wewe really think hurting her is better than protecting her?"
"She's tougher than wewe think," He argued. "And she's been through worse."
He thought's flickered to memories. Bella in the woods, lying on the ground. Her lifeless body being forced to breath. See what wewe did?
"It's funny." Then they flickered to happier times. Jacob's shed,late night laughs. See what I did.
"What are wewe doing to him?" Bella grimiced.
"It's nothing, Bella." I lied. Again. "Jacob just has a good memory, that's all."
Hi thoughts traveled again. Cuddling after the cliff dive. Asleep in eachother's arms.
"Stop it! Whatever your doing." She demanded.
"Sure if wewe want." He shrugged. "It's his own fault he doesn't like the things I remember, though." He smiled.
"The principal's on his way to discourage loitering on school property." I told Bella. "Let's get to English, Bella, so your not involved."
"Overprotective isn't he?" Jacob asked Bella. "A little trouble makes like fun. Let me guess, you're not allowed to have fun, are you?"
I pulled my lip back over my teeth ever so slightly.
"Shut up, Jake." She defended.
He only laughed. "That sounds like a no. Hey, if wewe ever feel like having a life again, wewe could come and see me. I've still got your motorcyle in my garage."
"You were supposed to sell that. wewe promised Charlie wewe would."
"Yea, right. Like I would do that. It belongs to you, not me. Anyway, I will hold on to it until wewe want it back." A smiled played lightly on his lips.
"Jake..." She whispered.
He leaned toward her. "I think I might have been wrong before, wewe know, about not being able to be friends. Maybe we could manage it, on my side of the line. Come see me."
Bella looked up at me then back to Jacob.
"I,er, don't know about that, Jake."
"I miss wewe everyday, Bella." He pleaded. "It's not the same without you."
"I know, and I'm sorry, Jake, I just..."
He shook his head, not wanting to hear anymore, and sighed. "I know. Doesn't matter, right? I guess I'll survive au something. Who needs friends." Who needs love? He asked in his head.
I felt the urge of Bella's nerves. I knew what she wanted. She had upset him, and it hurt her to see him like this.
"Okay, get to class." Mr. Greene's voice was stern but his thoughts were other wise. Okay, everyone go home. Don't come back. I don't care. "Move along, Mr. Crowley."
"Get to school, Jake." Bella whispered to him.
I released her and took her hand once more. Mr. Greene finally made it through the packed student body that incircled us.
"I mean it," He threatened. "Detention for anyone who's still standing here when I turn around again." Detention. Yea. Like I'm staying longer that I have to.
The students scattered, leaving for their inayofuata class.
"Ah, Mr. Cullen. Do we have a problem here?"
"Not at all, Mr. Greene. We were just on our way to class." I replied.
"Excellent. I don't seem to recognize yout friend." He turned to Jacob. "Are wewe a new student here?"
"Nope." He smirked.
"I suggest wewe remove yourself from school property at once, young man, before I call the police."
He grined when he imagined Charlie pulling up and giving him a ride back to La Push.
Jacob saluted him and kicked his bike to life. He spund around sharply and was gone in seconds.
"Mr. Cullen, I expect wewe to ask your friend to refrain from trespassing again."
I laughed lightly. "He's no friend of mine, Mr Greene, but I will pass along the warning."
Maybe Jacob was right. I left Bella, practly killing her. He brought her back to life and kept her happy. No danger, no tears. I caused the danger she was being put into. I left her thinking it was better for her. It was to an extent. He kept no secrets, had told no lies. I on the other hand seemed full of it all today.
In reality, he was better for her. But I would fight for her until she made a decision.
