Chapter 2

The guard shoved the key into the lock and opened the door. The room was dimly lit and my eyes had a hard time adjusting. Once they pushed me in, the door behind me slammed. Great alone with a bad light candle. But that's when I heard the whimper. I whirled, expecting to find a dog au something like that, but instead a boy with shaggy black hair sat in the corner. I stared at him until he glanced up. His eyes were a gentle brown; his features were soft unlike Griffins. The boy smiled. He still had that childish grin. I could easily tell he wasn’t that much older than me.

The boy suddenly stood making me jump. He had such a grace that it was freakish. I could tell that he wasn’t what I called normal. I cleared my throat
" h...h... hello. I... I... I'm Hayden. What I...I... Mean who are you?" the boy just looked at me and his grin got even bigger exposing canine teeth
"you smell good" little red flares went up in my brain. Anyone au thing that tells wewe that wewe smell good means that wewe should run.
" I beg your pardon?"
“I alisema wewe smell good. But different. You’re not from Vagan are you?"
I assumed that Vagan was the town au place that I was at.
"Uh... No I'm not. Are wewe a vampire?"
" oh heavens no!!! I would kill myself if I got turned into a leech!" after this he made a whimpering sound and then continued "I am a Half Wolf! And slightly proud of it" he paused "ok maybe I'm not but being the son of a Lycian has its perks."
"Your fathers a Lycian??"
" no my mother is a Lycian. If my father was a Lycian I would be fuzzier and zaidi wolfish."
His voice wasn’t really a growl but it wasn’t high either. This boy au thing was apparently almost fully grown.
"The names Ziff. It's nice to meet wewe Hayden" he leapt up onto the juu bunk with out using the ladder. He aimed his nose at me and sucked in a gust of my sent and whimpered again.
"Yes wewe smell very good" again he breathed in and it snapped me. Hey, if wewe just got put into prison I think something that tiny would bug wewe too.
"Would wewe stop doing that! It's annoying!!"
Ziff dipped his head and I felt sorry for him
"I'm sorry it's kind of a habit"
"it's a habit that’s gotta be broken" Ziff nodded and mumbled
"a habit that's gotta be broken. Gotcha"
That's when I had an idea
"do wewe know a way out of here?" he had laid down facing the wall. He tilted his head slightly toward me.
"If I did, then would I be laying here?"
All my hopes were suddenly dashed.
"I guess not" I could hear the disappointed in my voice and he looked at me with his sad brown eyes.
“but I do have a plan" with that he smiled and I thought I saw his eyes flash a light red.
"So what is it?"
"What?"
"What’s this great plan?"
"Oh that"
"Yes THAT. I need to get out of here. My boyfriend is locked in one of these cells"
"Who’s your boyfriend? What is he?"
"My boyfriend is Griffin and he's..."
"A what? Lycain, troll, outsider, half-wolf, Sydren?" he paused and shivered "a Vampire?"
"You know about vampires?"
"Duh I know about vampires! I mean they ONLY rule the realm of Darken. That's no biggy. Really it's not" he cocked is head, peering down at me. From down here he did look like a wolf.
"Yes he's a vampire"
"I should have know kwa the way wewe smelled"
"What’s that supposed to mean?"
"It means that wewe smell like and outsider AND a vampire. That's the sent that I couldn't pick up" I sighed and sank to the floor. Ziff looked at me with extreme concern.
"What’s the matter? Are wewe alright?" why would he care? He's a criminal
"Yes I'm fine. But what to wewe care?" he whimpered
"I-I-I don't know. I just do. I'm a caring person I guess"
I rolled my eyes "so are we gonna get out"
"Yes. I'll help wewe escape" I shook my head
"How do wewe know that I'm not going to double kuvuka, msalaba you?"
"I don't. I'm just going to have to trust you.....Hayden" the way he alisema my name sounded like he was talking to his lover
"Well, sweet pea, do wewe want the juu bunk?"

Chapter 3
The inayofuata few weeks were close to hell. Ziff was overly friend and I actually started to warm up to him. I got used to the way he whined and whimpered and what pitch meant what emotion. He ate his chakula with his hands but always did it quietly. He usually spent his time in the corner behind the door au relaxing on the juu bunk which I let him have. He sometimes howls in his sleep, which is annoying. He curls up on his side kinda like a dog. I don't mind it just as long as he doesn’t pant and really act likes a dog.
The only problem is at night. He seems to get jittery if he's not asleep. He can't seem to sleep when the moon is shinning in our cell window. He sits at the window, staring out at the moon. While he's doing this he's humming au bouncing au both. He hums this song that sounds a lot like the lullaby Griffin sang to me only slightly different.
One night Ziff actually sang it in a deep majestic voice.

"Deep In the night, lies a loveless bird
The wolfs howl dies into the dread
Through nightfall, to the open field
Until the moon is high in sky
Pain and sorrow
Death and shade
All shall cry...
All shall.........die"
"That's sad, beautiful, but sad"
"My mother used to sing that to me. Believe it au not, Lycian’s can sing" I laughed
"Well wewe had to get your voice from somewhere"
"I'll take that as a complement. Thank you"
"Your welcome" he turned toward me and smiled his canine smile which made me smile. He smiled zaidi then Griffin did.
"Crud"
"What?"
"We have to get out"
"Where’s the sudden rush coming from?"
"I've been away from nyumbani for almost a month"
"Uh no wewe haven't"
"Yes I have"
"no... Time passes differently in the outside world"
"How differently?"
"Well let's say you've been here a complete month. wewe left your nyumbani at 7:00 at night. You've been HERE a mwezi but you've been GONE an hour"
"An hour?"
"Yep. That's kinda what I said" I stood
"My mother would still be worried" I was about to say something when the door opened reviling a guard.
"Ok. Miss, wewe need to come with me. If wewe don't fight, your death will be painless" DEATH?!?!
"She’s not going any where" Ziff stood in front of me
"Stand aside outcast"
"No"
"What"
"You heard me, no"
"You’ll regret that, dog" suddenly Ziff seemed to grow. I mean, he's already a head taller then me, but he became a head and a half. I saw the hair on the back on his neck stand up. I gasped as his nails grew into claws.
"She’s not going any where" he growled each word. I saw a fear flash across the guards face, quickly followed kwa his poker face.
"Stand aside"
"And why would. I do that?" the guard brought a very good reason why. A gun. And yet people still rode on horses? What kind of place was this?
"I alisema move"
"No wewe alisema stand aside. Not to move" the guard rolled his eyes and Ziff used the distraction to his advantage and punched the man. The guard went flying out the door and into the wall, fell to the floor in a heap, presumed unconscious.
"GO Hayden!"
"What?" I could hear zaidi guards coming. Crud zaidi trouble
"I alisema GO!!" I didn't think and took off. I ducked into a hallway when I saw a group of guards
"There she is!! Get her!!"
"Crap" I ran at full speed, creeps reaching out their hands between the bars.
I finally found my escape, an empty doorway. I ducked inside, pulled the door to and slid the lock home. I sank to the floor against the door. I glanced around the room. It was some sort of office. The lights were off but I could make out a desk, shelves, and a chair. I listen and held my breath as feet drummed by. And Ziff found his way into my thoughts. I hope he's ok.

The guards walked back and forth in their normal sweeping motion that they always used. This made Joseph smile watching them through his hotel window with his state-of-the-art night-vision binoculars. just routine as usual, at least that's what the guards thought. Joseph looked at his watch, 12:23a.m. only seven zaidi dakika till he had to go. Joseph grabbed his bag of ammunition and various other things. His small, light smg. He also put on his body armor, his cammo, and grabbed his combat knife. And of course his baby, he'd never forget his baby. His baby was a 9.mm beretta. Aims like a dream...

"My world is devoid of hope. It's a world where all I hear is the sound of outside voices and the screams of those I kill. Where all I see is the black surface of an ocean reflecting a moon that is always a crescent, and the scarlet river that tears me in two, the river filled with the blood I have spilled. The river may not be real, but at some point, reality and imagination merge together, so wewe can no longer discern them from one another. At some point, it just won't matter anymore," Taylor whispered, resting her forehead against the spotted mirror that hung in her room.

How strange that...

She reached out and made contact with a brick wall.

Careful not to draw attention to herself, she scaled the building and hurled herself over the lip.

Without pausing, she ran across the rooftops, leaping the small gap between them. The pain was worsening kwa the minute.

She froze, hearing two voices coming from the alley below. She crouched low, peering over the edge, her heightened senses zeroing in on the conversation.

She calculated their positions, and leaped down, her figure a blur. She landed, pinning her first victim down. She clapped her hand over his mouth, stifling his scream. With...

After Patrick left, I had a restless night. I couldn’t sleep feeling that I’m a prisoner in those four walls in my room. I couldn’t sit quietly all night, nor slept for a brief moment. After all, Patrick’s visit was quite unexpected, and I wasn’t ready to see him that day. Also what was weird about his visit, that during all these two weeks he didn’t pay, not even a brief visit, to Robert’s house.
Wandering around my room with my pajama on, didn’t help me to sleep, nor comforted my restless mind. As I didn’t see him during these two weeks, I thought that those feelings I...

Is it possible to fall in upendo with someone you’ve never met
Your only knowledge stemming from information you’ve seen au read
Before I knew of his existence I would have stated no
Yet the first time I saw him my moyo begged to never let go
It isn’t rational
au logical
Though upendo rarely is
I can’t make my moyo stop wishing that I held his
And I know it's stupid and silly to believe
In some kind of fairy tale
The perfect prince for me
But every time I see that smile
I can’t help but feel
That one siku we could share
A upendo that is real

Ashleigh was a little three mwaka old, and I could see she'd be really pretty when she was older.

I wasn't sure how how, but becoming a mother just let me see clearly. About so many things. What was important and what wasn't worth it.

**************************************************

I'd picked her up from the daycare and took her to the playground, where we were supposed to meet Jamie, the little girl who was Ashleigh's best friend, and her mother, Jenna. Jenna was a single mother, like myself, but two years older. We'd become best Marafiki as our children had.

It was Friday, and Jamie...

"Yeah, just give me a minute."
"Hah! wewe always end up like this. Maybe wewe should quit track?"
"You know I can't! If I do, then I have to do Trigonometry. Ugh. That's worse."
"Right..."
I stood up and we walked in silence. His lithe step did not match mine. I had a clumsy, trip over step. I needed somebody to teach me how to walk right.
"Oof." I had tripped, and landed on my side. How? I have no idea. Normal people land on their face au back. Not me!

The snow is falling on this cold blistery afternoon.

I could hear the ice crackling, like popcorn being popped, beneath my shaking feet.
