Both, depends on what the story is 'asking' for.

(I'm writing a huuuuuge original story now, at least huge for me, I'm on nearly 18K and the story is just getting started and I started writing it in the past tense but halfway through I had to go back and change everything because it just worked better it the present tense, except for when the main character is telling about how her world came to be the way it is, then it's past :) )

It's interesting that most people have said they write in present tense as most books are written in past because it's simply easier.

I prefer to write in the present, write what you know. I take what is happening in the world and flip it into an alternate reality. It's a fantastic way to express your take on the world in your own words and imagination.

I Write About Both But I Write About The Present More! For Present I Write What Has Happened To Me On Fanpop, What's Happened At School, How Much I Miss My Friends, And Upcoming Video Games, New Televison Shows, Brand New Naruto, Deathnote, And Other Awesome New Uncut Box Sets! And When I Write About The Past I Write Of The Strange Dreams I Always Have, Some Exciting Thing That I Remember That Happened In The Past, And Flashbacks!(Like Bella_Swan96 Said!) Yep, That's Me!

Both really. But I sometimes I go back a few years...Say it's 2010, I'd go back to 1994 or 1986. Those years I focus on for some reason.

I find it surprising that so many people prefer writing in present tense over past tense, especially since it seems like present tense in books is more rare. I think present tense is confusing to write in. Sometimes I accidentally mix past and present tense together anyways. I don't mind reading a book in present tense, but I prefer writing in past tense. To me it's just easier.

It goes back and fourth for me. When I want a short story that's tense, or with a lot of mood, I like present. When I'm writing something long I use past.

Someone should try future. It would be really hard and you'd have to provide an explanation (is it a psychic vision or something?) But it'd be really interesting

Nowadays anyway, because most of my writing is in the form of a script. However, whenever I have written in the traditional novel style, I've always written in past tense.
