It’s common knowledge to fans that Netflix’s
is based on the events of the real-life Piper Kerman—known on the show as Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling. Kerman’s 2010 memoir served as the inspiration for the women’s prison dramedy, but one of the women she chronicles in the book, Cleary Wolters (a.k.a. Nora Jansen in the book and Alex Vause on screen, played by Laura Prepon), has come out with a memoir of her own titled
Wolters makes for a fascinating author, considering how the television show had vividly portrayed her fictional counterpart Alex as Piper’s on-off lover who meets Piper again in prison after a life of drug-related crimes. (In an interview with
last year, Wolters denied having sex with Kerman in prison as the show depicted and said they knew each other for just five weeks.)
“At first I didn’t know if I would actually like the show, but I had a morbid curiosity,” she told
. “Probably the same morbid curiosity got me in trouble in the first place. So I kept watching.”
Not that Wolters necessarily enjoys the portrayal or the show’s inference that she played a large part in Piper’s incarceration.
“I wanted to correct the concept that I was singularly responsible for Piper’s downfall,” Wolters told
“If she had never met me, she would probably have never gone to jail, and I feel bad for that,” Wolters continued. “But I met a lot of people in that period of time that had nothing to do with what I was doing. I was very open about what I was doing. The people who ended up being involved with me were people who wanted to be or asked to be.”
