extended season 4. While previous seasons have clocked in at around 10 episodes per season, this year
fans will get double that amount with a confirmed 20 episodes in season 4. As well as this, the season will be split in two, much like AMC does with shows such as
. While this means fans will get a much longer viewing time over the year, it also could spell trouble for some of the main characters and most definitely for many of the minor characters – after all, this is
! So let’s have a look what is in store for fans in the upcoming season.
, Ragnar (played by Travis Fimmel) led a very successful raid on Paris. However, this raid was not as successful for himself personally. After a terrible fall from a wall, the viking king appeared near death. In fact, Ragnar used his ill health to his advantage, faking his own death to get inside the walls of Paris. Ragnar then returned home to Kattegat, still a very sick man.
, Ragnar is still infirm and the show’s creator, Michael Hirst, hints at the end of an era for the fearsome king of the vikings. “His life from now on is in constant jeopardy,” Hirst told
As well as ill health, Ragnar also has to deal with the fact his brother, Rollo (played by Clive Standen), is set to betray him yet again as he marries into the Francia royal family. The end of season 3 of
saw Rollo accept a proposal from Emporor Charles (Lothaire Bluteau) to marry his daughter, Princess Gisla (Morgane Polanski), of West Francia. This means Rollo will now be in direct opposition to his brother, Ragnar. Will this be the final straw that tears apart the brotherly bond? According to Michael Hirst, it could be. “His brother, Rollo, may betray Ragnar again, and big time,” he teases
will introduce another romantic element with the arrival of Chinese slave Yidu (Dianne Doan). She was originally captured by the french and kept as a slave there for some time. It is still unclear as to how she ends up in Kattegat, but this is where Ragnar comes across her and is enchanted by where she is from. As Ragnar is a viking who likes to learn new things, her far away life will be of interest to him. This is the first time Hirst has admitted there will be definitely be a romantic element to their relationship though.
shown at San Diego Comic Con earlier in the year revealed images of Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) emerging from an icy pool. According to Hirst, season 4 will be a very challenging season for Bjorn. While the teaser video shows Bjorn rallying the vikings in favor of Ragnar, Hirst also reveals Bjorn would also try to prove his worth to his father by order of a mission in the winter wilderness. While there, “very, very nasty things happen to him,” Hirst explains.
The season 4 trailer revealed Bjorn announcing the arrest of Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) for his betrayal to Ragnar in killing the priest, Athelstan (George Blagden). While it appears from the teaser clip Floki will be punished, it seems Ragnar will be in torment as to how to punish the man he has loved for such a long time over the death of the man he loved for only a short time.
