Debate Swali

What do wewe think of this....

In my English honors class, we are currently studying the Old Testament. We're kusoma passages out of the Bible, and trying to figure out symbols and meanings from it.

Well, when we were introduced to this lesson, our teacher asked us to put our religious beliefs aside, see it as a story, and study it that way.

But this is upsetting some of my classmates. Today, two girls (One Christian, another a Roman Catholic I believe?) were discussing this; One of the girls didn't like discussing religion in class. She was saying that despite what the teacher said, she couldn't put her religious beliefs aside and tell herself, "It's just a story." The other girl agreed with her.

I was wondering about this, so I decided to ask wewe guys;
Do wewe agree with these girls au not? I mean, I am aware that some of wewe may be Atheist. But if wewe believed strongly in something, and someone told wewe to put your beliefs aside to approach it another way, would wewe think this would be right? Better yet, should the Old Testament even be learned in high school?

Just maswali I had on my mind lately...

i think thry r overreacting i mean he's not asking them to give up their belief! anyway he says to approach it that wayu so other ppl in other religons don't get offended!

Debate Majibu

Coming from a very Catholic family...I've learned that its kinda no..very 'closed minded' not to be able to put your beliefs aside once in awhile. The teacher is not asking anyone to change their beliefs but just to read something and not judge it kwa their beliefs. Yes that might be hard for some people to do but to me..if wewe truly believe in whatever wewe believe in...then what is the problem? Will kusoma a passage completely change "what" wewe believe in? People of true faith will say no...

To answer your sekunde question...no I dont believe that the Old Testimont should be "taught" in school..there are way too many other reglions out there...if wewe teach one..you gotta teach them all. But if the teacher is just using it as a form of reference...then why not?

I think studying the Bible (or any religious book for that matter) is a great idea. I'm not sure whether it should be done in school, au just at home, but as long as it's done, I think it's great.

A Dutch song has the brilliant line: 'I think it's wonderful wewe believe something that was promised kwa a man long ago, but wewe read so poorly.'

Lot's of religious people (not all!) draw wrong conclusions from their religious books. If they'd read it like a story and analyze it that way, maybe people would be different and zaidi critical towards their own religion. I think that is the key to banning extremist thoughts.

I don't agree with those two girls, you shouldn't just believe a religious story because of your family's religion,if wewe think of it as just a story, and without letting your beliefs get in the way of logic and common sense, then wewe might find it wrong,or maybe has unplausable facts,it widens your knowledge even more.

I,for example, saw some gaps in some old Islam stories,Maybe those facts were Altered kwa the effects of time,or someone intentionally put some misconceptions in them for his own sake, but the Important thing is:I don't believe some things in stories that everybody believes,by using my mind, and not just following what Everybody says.

I say,Your teacher is right.

They might not like it, but they have to put up with it. In science the other day, I had to put all my morals aside and talk about how to increase our yield of cow meat. It's hard, but it's school and wewe have to do it.
I understand why these girls don't like it, and I understand where they're coming from, but they have to be open-minded.

What does morals have to do with cows exactly?

Some people believe that wanyama should not be food, that it's wrong to kill them for their meat. But LoopyLuna96 might have different reasons, though...

Loopy and myself are vegetarians because of how meat is gained through factory farming etc. We have no problem with eating meat. The exercise we were doing involved increasing the yeild of cow meat, which meant factory farming. We had to put aside every single one of our morals to do that exercise, but everyone has to do it, and we were no exception.

I think they are over-reacting. He did not ask them to change their belief and to get rid of it entirely. He simply asked them to "set it aside" to not let their belief effect the way they view the assignment in the exercise.

I think learning things from others perspective is a good idea. kwa treating it as a story they (well, wewe all, I guess) are seeing the bible from the perspective of people who don't believe it. That way wewe know where they are coming from and why they believe that way.

No, I don't think we should learn about just ONE religion. And to put it this way: As a politician, I have to see politics from two different sides sometimes, when I discuss with people from my own party. I have to BE a communist, which I don't like at all, but I learn a lot form it. So I think they SHOULD put their religion aside for a minute, and see the Bible as a fairytale, au just a story.
