Chapter 3: Everything else but cooking
11 months later
“Hugh, we're back...” Lisa called from the doorway. She and Becca went shopping three hours before.
He didn't reply. He was too immersed in playing the piano. A piece he wrote eleven months ago, the siku after his wife's funeral. It was the only thing that he had played ever since then.
Lisa came in the room.
“Did wewe hear us?” she smiled, taking a kiti, kiti cha in one of the chairs in the room.
Hugh nodded, still concentrating on the playing.
“Ok... You're not into talking... I'll leave wewe to it” she got up from the chair and went to the kitchen.
Rebecca came in the room a dakika after.
“Hey dad” was all she alisema as she made her way to her room upstairs, tons of shopping bags in her hands.
After Jo's death, the kids had moved to the states. It was that, au the kids would have stayed with their grandparents. And Lisa suggested it would be better if the kids were around Hugh, so the kids moved in.
Hugh had gotten a mwezi off shooting after Jo died, and Lisa asked for one so she could be there for Hugh.
She had been there for him ever since Jo... passed away. She took care of the kids, made sure they went to school/college when they needed, and often went shopping with them, just like she had today with Becca.
She also made sure the house was in order. First month, she was dropping kwa every day, to make sure Hugh and the kids were fine. Hugh was never fine. He was always somehow lost. Almost like, a part of him died with Jo.
As Lisa started staying over night, helping Hugh deal with the horrible nightmares, it became zaidi than obvious, that she had to songesha in.
It was done, zaidi informally, nobody ever alisema she moved in. She, just did.
First, she brought her things over, she was staying in the guest bedroom. Next, refrigerator started being filled with soya products. Then, she brought all of her vitabu in the house. When she brought her mbwa and cat to the house there was no doubt she moved in. The kids loved the wanyama being around.
Lisa was often taking Hugh to chajio, chakula cha jioni when he felt like crying. She made him do yoga when he wasn't feeling too well. She organized tennis matches with the kids when she found him going though Jo's pictures.
She was there every time Becca started missing Jo, and she was there for boys when they felt like they didn't want to do anything.
Hugh was really thankful to her for all that she did. If it weren't for her, he would have Lost it a while before. And kids really, really liked her. And he li...
Suddenly, a delicious smell started coming from the kitchen, and made him stop playing.
And that was odd... because, he never stopped playing the piece before its end.
Hugh wondered why that was. Not wanting to think about it anymore, he got up and headed to the kitchen.
He walked in the jikoni just to find Lisa making pasta, tambi and sauce.
“You know, wewe could tell your daughter hi sometimes” Lisa said, tasting the sauce.
“I was playing the piano...” Hugh alisema absently, he wondered why all of sudden he found Lisa beautiful.
“Yeah, wewe play it most of the time you're home”she alisema still not giving him full attention “lacks salt” she alisema opening the cupboard with spices.
Hugh came to the cooker, and tasted the sauce himself. “And oregano” he alisema simply
“Are wewe questioning my cooking, Hugh?” Lisa grinned, it was the sweetest grin he'd ever seen.
Hugh mentally kicked himself, why on Earth did he start noticing Lisa's smiles all of sudden?
“No” he said, and holding back a smile, slightly turned away.
“You know... that's the first time wewe didn't finish playing the piece” Lisa alisema trying to add the oregano so that Hugh wouldn't notice.
Hugh nodded, turning back “And I know wewe added the oregano”
Lisa started giggling. Hugh found that very--
'Hugh, she's your best friend!'
“Sue me” Lisa replied, stirring the sauce. “Taste it now” she alisema picking up the spoon and shoving it in Hugh's mouth.
“Delicious, isn't it?” she asked with a grin, as he 'evaluated' the sauce.
“Of course, when wewe added the oregano” Hugh smiled at her.
“Oh, wewe got a little...” Lisa said, gesturing to Hugh's face “...sauce over there”
Hugh used his hand to remove it from his face “any good?” he asked, still struggling to find
where he got smeared.
“Let me” Lisa smiled, taking a cloth and gently removing the sauce from the corner of Hugh's lips.
“There” she smiled, her hand now on his shoulder “all good”
Their gazes met. They were both still for a few seconds, but to them, it could have been hours. Hugh leaned in unsure of what he was doing... And Lisa followed his actions.
Just as her hand was about to reach his neck, Rebecca came into the kitchen.
“I smell...” she alisema stopping in tracks as she saw what was about to happen “...dinner”
