OOC: Tell me if wewe guys like it! I might just continue this if wewe do! Key: Anything in italics is a flashback!
"They're in our forest!" Maia shouted angrily, throwing her quiver and bow to the ground. "Why are they in our forest? It's our home!" She glanced to her adoptive sister sitting lazily on the couch, petting the ferret, chororo-kaya on her lap. "I don't know, maybe they live around here au something? A new neighbor?" Ryder didn't take her eyes off the leather-clad book she was reading. "You don't get it! They're going to drive us off our own land and kill us! Just like they did with mom and dad!" Maia blinked, trying to get rid of the tears forming in her eyes. Ryder flicked her eyes toward Maia now, "Leave mom and dad out of this please? Just- just remain hidden for now." She tried to sound as calm as a seventeen mwaka old could. "Fine," Maia mumbled, "I'll get rid of them myself." And with that, she grabbed her bow and quiver off the dirt floor and stormed out.
Ryder groaned, Maia was so- so- pigheaded, sometimes. It made her wonder what went wrong in her little mind of hers eight years ago...
"We'll be back before sunset tomorrow, okay?" The two young girls looked eagerly up at their mother, who was slipping on her leather boots and tying them up. "Pinkie promise?" The youngest, Maia asked. Her mother bent down to her level and stuck out her pinkie finger, "Promise." The little girl gave off a small giggle as the two linked pinkies. “I upendo you, Mommy.” Maia whispered. “Love wewe too.” Her mother whispered back and kissed her on the cheek, then turning to the nine-year-old girl standing inayofuata to her. “Ryder, sweetie? Do wewe want to wish your mother goodbye?” Ryder just huffed and crossed her arms, looking away. Their mother sighed, standing up. “Don’t be that way, Tiger.” Their father appeared behind them, placing a hand on Ryder’s shoulder. Ryder turned to face him, tears streaming down her face, “Don’t go!” She whined, linking onto his leg. He smiled and bent down, hugging Ryder in a tight embrace, “Once a month,” He muttered, “We need to eat.” Ryder gripped onto him tighter, “No,” She muttered to herself. “I’ll starve.” Their father chuckled lightly and gently pried Ryder off him, standing back up and ruffling Maia’s hair, making her giggle again. Ryder sniffled and wiped the tears from her eyes, standing straighter.
Both of their parents gave a smile and blew a kiss, running out and jumping into a tree. The two watched as their parents disappeared quickly into the thick branches and leaves of the forest they had grown up in. Maia smirked and nudged Ryder in the ribs, “Wimp.” She giggled. Ryder frowned, “I am not!” She crossed her arms. Maia smirked, “You wanna follow them?” Ryder shook her head, “You know the rule! You’re too young to hunt yet! And I just so happened to be sekunde youngest, meaning I have to stay here and watch you!” Maia pouted and attempted puppy-eyeing her older sister, “Pwease?” Ryder shook her head and playfully whacked Maia on the side of her head. “Go get some sleep.” She smiled, and escorted Maia to her improvised forest bedroom.
It had been 4 days now! Ryder couldn’t sleep. She was worried, with the arrival of their new neighbors that they weren’t on friendly terms with. Grabbing her ukanda equipped with daggers of all sorts, she silently crept out of the mti house. Ryder landed and steadied herself in a thick branch, listening for sounds of her parents. A soft snap of a branch made her jerk around to see her little sister looking at her curiously. “Maia! Go back to the mti house!” She hissed. “They’re my mommy and daddy too.” Maia whispered, looking down. “I’m scared too.” She added on. Ryder sighed, “Fine, just keep up.” The two took off into the trees, finally arriving at a large clearing. Ryder gasped, while Maia stood frozen with fear. There, in the clearing, were their parents. Both of them lay on the ground, lifeless. “Mommy? Daddy?” Maia squeaked out. Ryder clenched her fists, not wanting to go look. Maia ran over to the two bodies, crying. Ryder just began to investigate what had gone down. There were small metallic bat-shaped things lodged in the trees, thin burn lines in the trees, also strands of what seemed to be red fabric. “No…” Ryder whispered, not wanting to believe any of it.
…”You really just had to talk with them, didn’t you?” Maia growled. “You fired at them!” Ryder protested. “I was trying to get a point across! They aren’t invited in our forest!” Maia yelled, beginning to sharpen out zaidi arrows. “They’re just a bunch of murdering invaders…” Maia mumbled to herself.
